Temporary Protection Status

TPS is a program that allows immigrants stay in the U.S. because their native country is unsafe due to violence or destroyed due to a catastrophic, natural disaster. Those under this program can stay in the United States and have permission to work and travel.

TPS is a temporary benefit that does not lead to citizenship.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must NOT have criminal records in the native country.
  • Must come from a foreign country that is approved by the United States.
  • Must have lived in the United States since a date specified by the Secretary of Homeland Security.
