About

WE ARE: IMMIGRANTS, CHILDREN OF IMMIGRANTS, FRIENDS OF IMMIGRANTS. SOME OF US ARE UNDOCUMENTED. ALL OF US ARE HUMAN.

Updated on January 2020.

Our Story; how we got started.

Based on the registration forms turned in, our school demographics consist of 87% Hispanic students. The majority of our peers who are immigrants come from Latin countries such as Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, etc. We also have a growing immigrant population from Vietnam and other countries. Some of these students are undocumented or have family members who are.

Many of us at Chavez HS, are part of a mixed-status family. This is where family members have different immigration status. (For example, parents may be undocumented, one child may have DACA, younger children may be U.S. citizens.)

When President Trump terminated DACA, on Sept. 5th, 2017, many people in our community were affected.

The Butterfly Project was created by a group of students who wanted to fight back against the current anti-immigrant administration and help our community.

We aim to empower undocumented youth by:

  • Educating them to know their rights
  • By allowing them to have a voice through anonymous audio-stories & humanize the immigrant experience
  • To inform and break-down laws that affect them
  • To aid undocumented students in their pursuit of college
  • To teach undocumented students how to take action and make change
