A musical based on Charles Addams’s original cartoons started to be worked on in 2007, written by Broadway veterans Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with Andrew Lippa providing the songs. Nathan Lane was originally cast as Gomez, with Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia, Krysta Rodriguez as Wednesday (now an 18-year-old), Adam Riegler as Pugsley (now an 11-year-old), Kevin Chamberlin as Uncle Fester, and Zachary James as Lurch.

After a 2009 trial run in Chicago, the show opened for Broadway previews in 2010. Drawing mostly bad reviews, it closed after 722 performances before going on a nationwide tour. Despite all the critical negativity circling it, performances were always sold out during its Broadway run, and in 2015 the musical was revived in Chicago. Now, there are plans for the show to tour the UK and Ireland, after premiering at the Edinburgh Festival in 2017.
