The property lay dormant throughout the 1980s, with creator Charles Addams dying from a heart attack in 1988 at the age of 78. Tragically, this meant he missed the biggest revival of mainstream interest in his long-running characters, with a $30 million movie that was the directorial debut of Barry Sonnenfeld. It starred Raúl Juliá (Gomez), Anjelica Huston (Morticia), Christina Ricci (Wednesday), Christopher Lloyd (Fester), Jimmy Workman (Pugsley), Judith Malina (Grandmama), and Carel Struycken (Lurch).

The movie was a big success both critically and commercially, grossing $191m at the worldwide box office and spawning a new cartoon (see below) and video games. For many, this film is the most popular incarnation of the franchise because of its modern sensibilities, high production values, and funnier tone.

Oddly, the movie also spawned a popular pinball machine, which has become the biggest selling pinball machine of all time (with more than 20,000 units sold since 1992).
