The Kink Perspectives Project

Using modern psychometrics, this project facilitates kink education by engaging users in eight perspectives of participation in kink.

Mission of the project

The Kink Perspectives Project was founded by a practicing psychometrician who serves as a local kink community leader and teacher. The purpose of the project is to offer a different way to look at why people participate in kink activities. Instead of relying on the role-based approach that most inventories use to approach the question of identification in kink spaces, instead, it relies on qualitatively-generated and CFA-backed categories of reasons that people engage in kink activities. This approach is married with an educational twist that shows the user what activities those with similar profiles to theirs have enjoyed in kink spaces, thus allowing users to discover new resources, communities, and interests.

The Eight Perspectives

Embracing the passion, connection, and strong feelings of kink activities

Exploring through kink things that are frowned upon by social norms or rules

Pursuing vizualizations or expressions that are unique to kink spaces

Centering objects, gear, attire, or particular practices in your kink scenes or kink activities

Connecting kink and sex for better moans, groans, and orgasms

Pleasing partner(s) as a way to enhance the experience of kink activities

Engaging in raw, unfiltered, natural, honest, instinctual kink play

Acting out the fantastic, memorable, or extraordinary within kink

If you're sapiosexual, love numbers, or want to see how the scale operates behind-the-scenes, feel free to browse this section. In it, the author explains some of the math behind the how the scale operates. The basis of much of the work here is Samejima's Graded Response Model (GRM), a particular model used in cases of polytomous (with multiple possible answers) items. For more information on that model, head over to Google Scholar and check out Samejima's work, beginning in 1969. The Project also relies heavily on factor analysis techniques (EFA, CFA) and dimensionality analyses. For a complete technical report on the psychometrics behind the project, the successive development of the multiple versions of the KPI, and a plethora of graphs, charts, and tables, please look at Section Three of the published book.

The KPI 2.0 was deployed in December 2022, following the ending of the KPI 1.0 pilot in June 2022. A third version is expected to be developed should the KPI 2.0 have more than 800 responses, and the author has significant time available to analyze the data and generate a new model.

Section contains information if you wish to donate or support the KPP and the KPI. When sufficient data is available to publish a book, the link to purchase it will be available from this page.

We strongly encourage the continued education of all members of the kink community. Here are a few links to sites that we highly recommend.
