Entertainment Writing

About Entertainment Writing

In this section, you can find information about different types of entertainment articles your students could write. I mostly approach this in terms of review writing. I have had the most success teaching this unit after I have taught opinion writing. It naturally builds on the argument, ethos, logos, and pathos lessons from that unit.

You can make this unit long or short; however, students tend to really enjoy everything about this type of writing. You can bring some really fun, creative, and engaging lessons into the classroom.

Here are two songs that students enjoy writing about. They generally do not like these songs, but they love describing these songs in the most specific and funny way possible.

Sensory Writing

I have my students work on analogy writing and then sensory writing in the entertainment writing unit. This activity comes after we have practiced analogy writing.

For this activity, I set up sensory stations around the room. I have boxes with holes cut in them. They have to reach in and touch items and write about. I put items like slime, Floof, cotton, sandpaper, etc. in there.

I also have stations with old film canisters. I put drops of different essential oils in there. They then smell the canisters and write about it.

The last station has a weird song for them to listen to. They almost always hate it, so they enjoy writing horrible analogies about it.

This is the handout I use while students are rotating from station to station. Make sure you group your students so there is one big personality in each group. That person will fuel the group with energy.

Note: You can add sight or taste to your stations. I used to have taste, but COVID has made that not possible at my school right now.
