About Laws and Ethics Lessons
In this section, you will find lessons about ethics and laws. This should be something you do early on in your class. If students have a grasp of the laws that govern them and the ethical implications of covering a story, they will make better decision. Basically, if you spend time on this, you will have less classroom management issues. Students oftentimes make better decisions because they are thinking about the ethical consequences of their actions. Hang those SPJ Code of Ethics in your classroom and reference them often!

Students need to understand the basics of journalism law. I recommend teaching about laws and court cases early in the year. This will help them know about their rights, and it will help guide them in how to act. I have found this also helps establish a healthy class environment and makes classroom management a little bit easier.
Laws are different from ethics. Just because something is legal doesn't make it ethical. You will also need to teach a lesson on journalism ethics/ the SPJ Code of Ethics to balance this out.
Here is an activity I use to teach about the laws and their rights.
