About Website Creation Resources

There are many different ways to publish an online newspaper. First off, your website should not just be your students dumping your print paper online with no thought. They need to be different. When I first started advising the school newspaper at my school, I inherited a website that no one knew how to use. It never looked good, and it took us too long to figure anything out. We just moved print articles online. It was bad. The following year I went to a conference and a woman was presenting on how to take your program online and not have it be an after-thought. She talked a bit about SNO, School Newspapers Online. This is an online hosting service that gives support and helps you get started. They have tutorials for everything you could possibly think of. And if you think you broke something, you put in a support ticket, and the turnaround time is FAST. Switching to SNO was the best decision I made for our program. I am not a paid sponsor— just a loyal customer. This section gives pointers and ideas on how to build, use, and manage an online newspapers. Some ideas are aimed at SNO users.

This is what the backend of SNO looks like.

Make Changes to Your Website

It's important to make your students change the website every year. If you don't make them, they won't do it. Plus, the website will not feel fresh and fun. It also forces them to learn how to use the website, and it energizes them.

After the class is established and can run, I have a group of editors and some art team members make the decisions for the overhaul. Here is a handout that guides them.
