This page exists for historical interest. There have been many caves found and lost via quarrying on Portland over the years, however Sawmill is the only one I've been privileged enough to visit which is no longer possible. The cave was first discovered in the 1970's and then buried. It was briefly unearthed in 2013 before being quarried away a few weeks later. Many of the photo's taken during what is thought to be the final trip into the cave are below. This cave was a great loss - it provided 120 m of pheatic passage of which most was big enough to walk in (more or less unheard of on Portland).
Gone - it was in Inmosthay quarry before being quarried away.
The cave consisted of a linear phreatic passage in which you could walk! Just beyond the entrance a short boulder choke had to be negotiated. Beyond this the tunnel displayed vadose development and could be followed until a second impassable choke was met 100 m later.
