A short but just about worthwhile rift which can be traversed at two levels providing a round trip.
Cave length: 60 m
Entrance: SY 70007 71464 (50.54217, -2.42462)
Park in the Church Ope car park at the south end of Wakeham. Follow signs to Church Ope Cove passing Portland museum on your left and the remains of Rufus Castle on you right. When you arrive at the view point, instead of descending the steps to the cove, turn left and follow the path until you arrive at a large cliff on your left popular with climbers - The Cuttings. Just after passing a wide path leading back left handed the cave entrance is seen approx. 10m up the cliff in a vegetated corner between the bolted climbing routes 'Pillow Talk' and The Cutting Edge'. The climb to the entrance is a straight forward scramble however the inexperienced may like a hand line.
The cave descends steeply inside the entrance over dead pigeons ending in a tricky climb down a wedged boulder lathered in bird poo. A 20 m hand line may prove useful and can be rigged from the entrance. At the bottom, the rift can be followed along a false floor over a hole to the point it becomes too tight. Just before this, a second hole in the floor can be descended to reach the lower level. This can be followed back towards the entrance climbing up through the first hole passed over, to arrive back at the bottom of the entrance slope.
Trip time - 30 min
20 m hand line.
