A short but wide rift in close proximity to both Coffin Hole and the Allotment Rift area of Grove Cliff Caves which ends choked. The width of this rift suggests far more is hiding beyond the known passage however everything is scarily loose.
Cave length: 35 m
Entrance: SY 70325 72368 (50.55032, -2.42021)
Park at the ventilation tower on the cliff top behind the Young Offenders Institute at the Grove. Take the footpath heading North down over the cliff. A few metres down the path, shortly after passing through a gate, clamber around the end of a fence on the right and follow a path (concreted in places) back south along the underside of the upper cliff. The cave entrance is found in the back corner of a recess amongst bushes marking the end of the path.
The rift is followed as walking passage with a concrete floor until a 1 m climb is reached fronted with a wooden pallet. Soon after it is necessary to climb up through delicately wedged boulders to reach a small chamber formed at a cross rift. Left has been dug but found to be extremely unstable, right pinched out immediately and ahead a small, very loose breakdown chamber is found after a short crawl.
Trip time - approx. 10 mins.
