A short rift on West Cliff approx. 20 m long. The main interest is getting into it and the potential for extension beyond the terminal choke.
Cave length: Approx. 20 m
Entrance: SY 67930 71342 (50.540964, -2.453927)
Head North for 210 m along the cliff top coast path from where the route from the Westcliff climbers car park joins. The entrance is invisible from above, but lies within an obvious recession in the cliff. The Abseil point being marked by an old stake (do not use as this is likely to be decades old). Suitable stakes must be installed to arrange an abseil from. Initially this is down a steep loose slope to arrive at the top of a 4 m vertical chimney. From here the entrance is obvious. Descend the chimney to land on a mud / rock bank bridging the rift. Drive another stake into the bank and re-belay your rope for the final 5 m descent to the cave floor. Several rope protectors are required.
Once in the cave, the rift can be followed along a pigeon shit carpeted floor for 10 m to a blockage. Climb (with difficulty) 5 m directly up to arrive in a much larger and cleaner area. From here an ascending slope can be followed to a mud / rock choke after a further 10 m. The end of this cave is high up; there cannot be much above your head!
Trip time (most of which is getting in / out) - approx. 1 hour.
35 m rope, 3 stakes (minimum), 3 rope protectors, SRT kit.
