During the final session of TESMUN 2024, the Economic Social Council (ECOSOC) focused on the agenda , "Addressing Incoming Challenges and Promoting Economic Growth Through Sustainable Development." The delegate from Japan (Sheewin Shrestha) delivered a General Speaker's List (GSL) speech, outlining Japan's strategy for economic growth and equality through sustainable development. The delegate emphasized integrating economic policies with ecological practices to create a balanced and progressive development model.
Following the GSL (General Speaker List), the issue of "Economic Disparities Caused by Income Inequality" was raised in the moderated caucus. "The Ukraine has focused on diversifying its trade but failed due to the actions of neighboring countries; also, how does the Russian Federation explain the economic hardship?",The delegate from Ukraine(Kareen Neupane) remarked in the moderated caucus.Further, the delegation charged that Russia was ignoring essential assets that were required by both their country and other nations.
The Delegate of Russia(Kabya Adhikari) responded to the charges raised by the Delegate of Ukraine(Kareen Neupane) by stating, "Many deaths and starvation of people of lower socio-economic status have been caused by Ukraine's corruption and errors in the past."
The brick countries failed to remove instability and inequality in development and inequality in developing countries, commented the delegate of Ukraine(Kareen Neupane).
The delegate of Germany(Samyog Jamarkattel) accused the delegate of Russia(Kabya Adhikari) about the delegate’s tax systems favoring the wealthy people. The delegate of Ukraine(Kareen Neupane), replying to the comment made by the delegate of Russia(Kabya Adhikari), stated, "The war has led to instability and inequality, but the delegate is still blaming Ukraine for its own mistake.”
After the accusation being blamed back and forth, the crisis arose: “A recent worldwide alignment on the green economy seeks to reduce carbon emissions through the use of fossil fuels, but wealthy countries have mostly disregarded this issue, greatly harming developing nations that depend on fossil fuels for economic growth.”
This sparked intense discussions in the ECOSOC committee, with delegates from both developed and developing nations clashing over the responsibilities and consequences of transitioning to a green economy.Ultimately, the committee was tasked with finding a balanced solution that promotes sustainability without compromising the economic stability of vulnerable nations,a challenge that remains at the heart of the ongoing debate.
