Students complete a storytelling/poetry/technology unit in language arts class. The unit begins with a storytelling visiting the classes, telling stories. Students learn techniques of storytelling and write their own stories. They must be biographical in nature, based on real life experiences of the students, and can be serious or humorous. The storyteller and teacher work with students as they develop their stories.
Then, students present their stories, orally, in front of the class, and receive ratings from their peers and a grade from the teacher.
Once the oral storytelling part is complete, students convert their stories into poetry. They write eight line poems, which are based on their individual stories. The poems must summarize the stories they told. Students represent their poems by adding images to the text.
Lastly, the poems, with their images, are put into a class slide presentation.

Middle school students, grades 6, 7, and 8, write book reviews of their favorite novels. Students chose their two favorite novels from the ones they read during the entire school year, and wrote book reviews so other students could use their reviews as they decide on novels they'd like to read.
The novels are both classic and non-classic books. Students chose the novels they liked the best, and wrote reviews they thought would assist their peers.

4th graders in Mrs. Montrello's class studied idiomatic expressions and their meanings. After completing the unit, they demonstrated what they learned about idiomatic expressions by creating a slide presentation. Each student created two slides. The first slide had an image and an idiomatic expression. The second slide had the student's interpretation of the idiomatic expression.
Students worked with their classroom teacher, the art teacher, and the school's TA (tech assistant). When done, they had a class collection of idiomatic expressions and interpretations by the students.
