Students can see the actual map Ptolemy made by Ptolemy and start off by trying to point out different geographical features, regions, and different words (names) that are used. Lead students to first point out any continents they see. Then they can branch out and discuss any other places that stand out. Students will observe how the shapes of continents such as Africa are misshaped and not fully depicted. This is where you explain to the students that this shows us the knowledge of the world from Ptolemys home, and didn't reach throughout the whole of Africa and also the New world ( America). At this point in time, explorers were a pivitol reason for additions to existing maps.
