Hello Grade 8!
Be sure you have sent me your cover design completed and your last drawing.
This is it! One small addition is all you need to complete your journal.
Before you staple your journal pages together with the cover and backing you need to write a small introduction. It can be as few as three sentences or an entire page, if you'd like. You can write in color and/or add a design to the page.
Please write about how during this historic time, this journal was a way for you to take a close view of certain things around you while learning at home. Please share your perspective (thoughts) about it.
Now go ahead and put the journal together in chronological order (the introduction is the first page).
Please email me a picture of the completed work to: Jtasho@tcabrockton.org
I hope this journal will be something you will take out and look at in the future. You have recorded a little bit of your own visual history that I hope will be meaningful to you when you look back.
Best wishes for all new things to come!
- Mrs. Tasho
Hello Soon-to-be Graduates!
This is the second week of your Celebration lesson! There is 1 additional requirement for this week, the cover! You are completing your celebration cake on a plate with a very thoughtful explanation on the page with the drawing. You are now ready to make the cover of your journal (you will need a back too).
Directions:
Center these three lines of information on your cover. Make the cover with colored paper, if you would like. Make the lettering bold. Use a particular font but hand write it. Then include:
First line: My Journal
Second line: Art 2020
Third line: [Your name]
Use some ornamentation (patterns) all around the edges of the cover. I have provided some ideas here. Use whatever materials you would like. Do not staple it together yet. That will come in the last lesson.
Please complete this project by Friday May 22 and email me a picture of your assignment to: jtasho@tcabrockton.org
-Mrs. Tasho
*This is a 2 week project.
Hello Grade 8,
As you think about these last weeks of school, you probably are planning a celebration of some kind. Often a special cake is included in celebrations. For your last journal entry, I would like you to design a cake like the artist Wayne Thiebaud might have done for one of his paintings. He loved to paint all kinds of sweets, including candy and ice cream, things we all love! His paintings of cakes are probably the most well known.
For this new journal assignment I would like you to draw a cake and include the word Congratulations on the top of the cake.
Do it in color on a plain white paper held vertically.
Please do not use lined paper, if possible.
Include lots of decorations (details ) on the sides of your cake. Maybe yours is a three layer cake! Make it fill most of the paper to stand out and look important.
Place it on a special plate.
Leave room to write your thoughtful explanation about your celebratory cake. Please write about what the symbol of this cake means to you, especially under these circumstances. This should be at least a paragraph. Use additional paper if you need to.
Be sure to watch this slide show to help with ideas and to find the picture of the cakes with the words on top, you'll find one that is appropriate for the occasion! That’s my “gift” to you!
CONGRATULATIONS Eighth Graders!

REMINDER: If you have not sent your three completed journal assignments, please send them now.
Hello everyone!
You are on the second week of this lesson. I hope you noticed that we are doing this journal entry with more specific directions, based on the work of Roy Lichtenstein. He drew everything with a bold, black line (maybe he added it after). He also added patterns to many spaces in the picture. His bedroom scene is also done in color.
Go back and read the directions to make sure you don’t miss anything. Be sure to set up your page the same way with your name and date and the thoughtful explanation about why you chose that particular space to draw. Your picture may not be a bedroom, that's ok. We are just using Roy LIchtenstein's work as an example.
4 points to remember as your completing your assignment:
Completed drawing is in color
Every line is black and bold
Patterns are used somewhere in the picture
You are working in the same style as Roy Lichtenstein
This assignment should be completed and emailed to me by Friday, May 8. My email is: Jtasho@tcabrockton.org
Let me know if you have questions or if I can help in any way.
-Mrs. Tasho
ATTENTION UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS: When I first set up this online Art Classroom, I asked you to keep all your assignments in a safe place until we were back together again. Unfortunately we still are unable to be back in the classroom so I am going to ask you to submit pictures of your completed assignments to me via email.
I will leave instructions in the weekly assignment indicating when you will need to submit your work. Please check the updated assignments for specific instructions and due dates to submit.
Hello everyone! Welcome back.
A quick reminder before we get into this week's lesson:
You should have already sent your 3 completed journal drawings with a thoughtful explanation related to this unusual set of circumstances. If not, please send them now. Also, please remind fellow classmates to check the art website for their assignments. https://sites.google.com/view/tcabrockton-art/home
Now, let's get started with this week's lesson. We will concentrate on your space or place where you spend most of your time. In many cases this may be where you sleep, study or where you just hang out.
Vincent Van Gogh made a painting of his space called The Bedroom. As you can see, there are groups (three items can be a group) of items in this room. For instance, the items on the table are a group. The window and table and chair could be a group. Things in groups are close together and sometimes overlap. A group can have more than three items.
To start your assignment, take two or three photos of a group of items in your space. Choose which group you want to draw and write a thoughtful and thorough explanation about why you made this choice. Looking at the photo should help you decide which composition looks best.
Now take a look at Roy Lichtenstein’s art that was based on Van Gogh’s idea. Van Gogh has used oil paint in a painterly style while Lichtenstein’s painting seems like it was almost drawn with markers. The contrast in his style, or way of painting, is almost humorous. He also adds a lot of patterns everywhere!
You are now ready to begin your drawing in the style of Roy Lichtenstein. Since he uses a lot of black outlining, I encourage you to use a black marker for that purpose.
REMEMBER:
A group of three items from your space
This is done with color, not black and white The outlining can be black marker, or a black pen
You are including patterns Same page setup as always with explanation
This is a 2 week project. I will add some comments and expectations on this art website next week.
Have fun!
-Mrs. Tasho
Hello Students! The middle school classes are still working on the same project. It will be fun to share when the time comes. So, here we go!
*This is the second week of the third journal drawing in your story.
Hello Grade 8,
You are completing your third journal page this week. Please review the directions that I gave you last week for this assignment. It is important to pay attention to your explanation of what you drew and why you chose it.
It should be connected to something you have noticed or paid attention to, particularly because you are confined to home while you are pursuing your school work. Please be sure your explanation is clear and easy to read. This week you are required to provide AT LEAST 3 sentences, feel free to include more!
● All THREE journal drawing assignments and the first assignment about architecture (that was part of your packet) are due on Friday, April 17.
To submit your assignments: Please take a picture of each assignment and attach all 4 images in ONE email. My email is: jtasho@tcabrockton.org
Enjoy your vacation. Be sure to check this website on Monday, April 27 for your next assignment.
-Mrs. Tasho
We are on our third lesson for the journal we are creating. I sent you all an email last week with a reminder to check the art website and further suggestions as you complete parts of this visual journal we are making. *This is a 2 WEEK assignment.
Instructions:
Photograph and AREA while standing OUTSIDE.
Then choose one object or one small part of the photograph to draw. It is important that you have a thoughtful explanation of WHY you have made this selection. For example, you decide to photograph the doorway of a house that has a flower pot on the front steps. You choose to draw the pot on those steps. Maybe this is the pot on the steps of the home where your best friend lives. You miss that friend and being able to walk up those steps to visit him/her.
Be sure to follow the same directions for name and date location ( upper left corner) and keep the drawing at least half the size of the paper.
This week, please use at least THREE sentences for your thoughtful explanation. Remember this whole idea connects to your stay at home time in this unique situation.
The three photos I have provided are paintings by the American artist, Edward Hopper. Many of his paintings have to do with the mood or feeling about a situation. There are examples here of Hopper’s paintings that could describe our three lessons. You photographed:
Inside Your House
Looking Through a Window
A Photo Taken Outside
Next week I will post reminders and suggestions for this lesson. More importantly, I will also ask you to send ONE email by April 17th with all three of these journal assignments, as well as the first assignment that went home in your packet about architecture. These FOUR assignments will then be graded.
Wishing you and your family a Happy Easter!
-Mrs. Tasho
Hello everyone! I hope you enjoyed taking photos INSIDE your home to create a memory last week. Please remember to submit that drawing according to last week’s direction and keep it in a safe place to bring to school when we return. Then we will put our photo journal together.
This week’s lesson focuses on what we are seeing THROUGH the window. As you observe your day to decide what to photograph, look out the window for inspiration. Tell a story about what you are seeing. Record the time of day. For instance, at 9:00am I observed the quiet and stillness in my yard. But what caught my eye was the bright sunshine on my backyard tree and the tree’s shadow spread across the ground. After taking a successful photo I can draw that tree with its shadow. No need to draw anything else.
Remember:
Photos are taken from looking THROUGH the window. For example, "I am inside today, it is rainy. I see a bird in a puddle on the street outside". Like last week, your instructions are to focus on a single item. So, in this case, I may choose to draw the bird in the puddle. Enlarge the area you want to draw for a better view.
Draw in black and white or color if you would like. No markers. Always use the same size paper Set the paper up the same way EVERY time.
Name and date in top left corner Under the drawing write an explanation of what you photographed ( what situation you observed) and a description of what you drew.
Hope you enjoy this week's recording of a memory through drawing.
-Mrs. Tasho
The Project: Grab your phone to take a picture/pictures to record a memory of something very simple or funny or just something cool looking that catches your eye. It could be…. my little brother eating the SAME cereal, out of the SAME bowl (that’s what he does).
Once you have a picture you like, use it for reference to draw one object from that photo. In this case, you may want to draw the bowl, maybe with the spoon and a spill on the table. (Don’t draw everything in the photo).
Use a pencil or ballpoint pen or do it in color if you have materials. Each week following, I will give you a prompt about where to place your focus. Once you have completed the drawing, please write a caption or small explanation beneath it to explain the moment when you photographed the picture.
Remember, you are focusing on a single item to draw from the whole photo. If you would like to share a photo of your drawing to my school email, please do! But remember to keep your original drawing in a safe place. When all the drawings are complete at the end of this time away, you will be asked to put them together like a book or a journal. So, be sure to keep them safe and in good shape.
Materials: White paper of any kind or size that you have ( it shouldn’t be smaller than 6”x9”)
Pencil or ballpoint pen is fine if you are drawing in black and white.
Colored pencils would work also.
I ask that markers NOT be used. They tend to show through the paper.
Instructions: The first drawing is done from a photo you have taken INSIDE your home. Draw the item or items using most of the space on the paper. Put the date in the top left corner and put your caption UNDER the drawing.
Finally, this is not a cartoon assignment. You are drawing what you see in the photograph.
I hope you have fun creating some great memories. Remember, I am here if you have any questions, you can reach me by email.
