This final week will be given as time for questions about finishing lessons and to catch up on work already assigned. Grades close on June 12 at the end of the school day. I cannot accept any work after this time.
This has been a challenging situation for everyone. I am so proud of the students who have put in so much effort and have made great creative choices when completing their lessons. It was a pleasure to review your artwork.

Hello Artists,
Last week you started the lesson using ovals, and straight and curved lines to draw your birds on a wire. This week, please finish, if you haven't already.
Did you know that there are lots of different types of birds? Let’s think of some. There are canaries, and parrots, peacocks and emus, doves and hummingbirds and owls! Ducks, swans and geese are birds that love water. There are so many birds.
This lesson is all about you using ovals to make any picture you want from the new list of birds I gave you. Maybe you have a book at home about a bird. If you would like to draw more than one bird, go ahead. Make sure you think about all of the space around the bird. Is it sky, or grass or water? There are lots of ways to finish your picture. I can’t wait to see this picture you are doing all by yourself using ovals.
Have fun!

Hello Artists,
This will be a 2 week project. This week we are using what we know to do something new. We already know how to make curved lines and we have drawn ovals before when we made fish. Let’s make some birds using ovals. The oval can be his body and a little oval can be his head. You need a small triangle for his beak. Now use some straight lines for his legs. Maybe the bird is flying away. You need to add his wings spreading out. And don’t forget the tail.
Let’s add the wire for the birds to stand on. The first picture has a straight line. The wires near my house have curved lines like the second picture. What do your wires look like out by the street?
Birds that are black are called ”blackbirds”. But not all birds are black, are they? You can make your birds any color that you want. After you color them you could paint all of the beautiful sky. Maybe the sky is filled with clouds and it is a very grey day. Or maybe a sunny day! It might even be raining. I can’t wait to see what your birds look like on the wires.
Have fun!
Hello artists,
This is the second week of this lesson on motion and movement.
You are probably finished drawing yourself dancing with your arms and legs bending while you dance to your favorite music. Did you make the face and hair look like you? Are you wearing a special outfit?
This week you can add the floor. Maybe your floor has a pattern with stripes or squares. Maybe when you dance at home you dance on a rug.
Your picture will be finished when you color all the empty space that is left. That is called the background. Look at the painting of the ballet dancers (in lesson 6) again. Every space is filled with paint. It looks so beautiful. When yours is finished, it will look beautiful too!
Have fun.

Hello Grade 1 Artists,
I hope you've been able to get outside to do some running and jumping. Maybe on rainy days you were even dancing to music when you were inside.
There is an artist named Edgar Degas who loved to paint pictures of dancers. He loved ballet dancers because of the way they move their arms and legs. Look at the picture below.
Moving your arms and legs is fun when you dance, don’t you think? This week you are going to draw a colorful picture of yourself doing a dance. Here are two drawings of children having lots of fun dancing. Notice how the arms are stretched up high and the knees are bent when they move.
Let’s get started! Here is what you need:
A sheet of white paper that you will hold the tall way ( vertical). We learned that when we were back in school together.
Some markers and crayons, or even paint if you would like. Let’s make it colorful!
Remember, this is you! So make sure you add your face, your hair, your clothes and your shoes. Be sure to stretch those arms up high and bend those knees. Make your drawing as big as the paper.
Have lots of fun.

This is the second week of our lesson: Curved and Straight Lines
Hello First Grade Artists,
Have you been busy making lots and lots and lots of straight and curved lines for the flower stems? Did you make those big sad face lines (those are curved lines too) to make the bridge, just like Claude Monet? I bet your picture is very colorful! Did you use any paint or markers? If you used markers, you can add water to the flowers you already made with the markers and it will turn to paint! You know this already. We have tried it.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson. I just love Monet’s garden!
At this time, I would love to see any of the art lessons you have completed, if you would like to share.
Email a picture of you work to me at: jtasho@tcabrockton.org

Hello First Grade Artists!
This week you are going to be an artist just like Claude Monet. He lived in Paris, France and he loved to paint flowers, especially gardens. He had lots of gardens at his home. There is a very famous painting called Monet’s Garden. It has a bridge in it that you can walk across. When you do, you can see water lilies in the pond. You can see the picture with the bridge here.
Let’s make a painting of Monet’s garden with the bridge and lots of flowers. The bridge is made with three curved lines. Those lines are like sad face lines. I see some straight lines in between. I guess we need curved and straight lines to make the bridge.
Now we are ready to fill the garden with flowers. I know I need some straight lines for the stems but........not all flowers stand up straight! They might bend over because they are so tall. Or maybe the wind is making them bend. That means we need a curved line for those flowers.
Now you are ready to start. Get your white paper and hold it across. Yes, that is horizontal. Remember? Get your paints ready or whatever materials you have to add color. Maybe some markers?
Make the bridge all the way across the paper. Go ahead and fill the paper with flowers that have straight stems and curved stems.
If you would like to see more of Monet's garden, I also included a link to a preview of one of my favorite stories, Linnea in Monet's Garden by Christina Björk, illustrated by Lena Anderson. You can see lots of Monet's artwork as well as photos of his beautiful home. I hope you enjoy it!
Have lots of fun! *This is part 1 of a 2 week project.

Hello Grade 1 Artists,
I am thinking about how fantastic your yellow school bus must look with all of the windows in it. What other parts did you add? Are they all shapes? Did you put some letters on the bus? I wonder if you made the road at the bottom.
In this second week, I hope you take your time and add the face of a school friend in every passenger window. Don’t forget the bus driver! Does he/she wear a hat? Remember to think about what their hair style looks like and the color too. I bet they all have very happy faces!
Please remember to keep all of your artwork in a safe place until you need to share them with me.

*This is week 1 of a 2 week project (like 2 art classes).
Hello Grade 1 Artists,
This week we are concentrating on using circles and rectangles inside of another shape... a school bus, a very long school bus. We will need a long one in order to include the faces of our friends on the school bus and the driver. Maybe we are going on a field trip together. That would be fun! Now add the details to the school bus. Look for little things you haven’t included.
Here is what you will need: One piece of white paper with it in a horizontal position. Whatever materials you would like to draw and color with. I think you will definitely need some yellow!
Let’s start by drawing a rectangle almost as wide as the paper and then add on the bump at the front of the bus. The picture I included might help you see the shapes. Remember, our school bus is very long. You will need circles for the wheels. There are circles inside of the circles. How many? You will also need lots of squares for the windows. Now the hard work is done.
Now it is time to add just the FACES of your friends who are on the bus with you. Don’t forget to add their hair and ears. Maybe someone is wearing a hat. maybe someone wears glasses, like me. When you put the faces in the window (squares) of the bus see if it reminds you of the face of the Mona Lisa we colored in the picture frame.
Have fun! Happy Easter!

Hello first grade artists,
Are you still working on your circle tracing project? This method of tracing the circles through each other is called overlapping. I bet all the circles are traced and you are finding all the new shapes that were made. Now you need to slowly and carefully color all of those new shapes. Do you have a color plan? Which colors did you choose?
Now, I have a surprise for you! Do you remember the first assignment we did at home ? It was about the Mona Lisa, a portrait of a lady that is in a museum called the Louvre, in France. I have a story for you to watch that’s called “The Museum”, a book by Susan Verde. When you watch, see if you can find the Mona Lisa! Watch the story here:
I hope you love the story as much as I do.
Miss you all!

Instructions: Hello my first grade artists! I hope you have been busy with your school work and also having some fun. Here is your art project to do at home. You have 2 weeks to work on this, just like 2 art classes.
Remember the clown we made doing a handstand? He was so funny and so cute! You did a great job tracing a lot of circles for parts of his face and his costume. Circles drawn through each other (overlapping) can be very interesting, too.
I want you to look for three things that are circles that you could trace. More than 3 is okay too. (bowl, cup, can, etc.)
Make sure they are different sizes and all bigger than a quarter.
Use paper (larger than computer paper if you have it).
Trace all three circles passing through each other (overlapping) until the paper is filled. Then look at all the new shapes you have made.
Use whatever materials you have to color in the new shapes. Take your time. It will be a masterpiece!
Have fun!
