This final week will be given as time for questions about finishing lessons and to catch up on work already assigned. Grades close on June 12 at the end of the school day. I cannot accept any work after this time.
This has been a challenging situation for everyone. I am so proud of the students who have put in so much effort and have made great creative choices when completing their lessons. It was a pleasure to review your artwork.

Hello Artists,
I hope you are having fun designing a pattern for the border on your journal cover and the back page. Make sure you have the necessary information on the front cover according to the directions I provided in last week's lesson. You have one last thing to add... an introduction page. This is like the introduction in a book. Please write a paragraph that talks about the thoughts and feelings you have about making your visual journal. Has it helped in some way, or inspired you? Has it created other feelings?
Send me the cover, back page and introduction by JUNE 8. (jtasho@tcabrockton.org)
Put the entire journal together in the correct order, with the introduction first. After you send me pictures of this last assignment, keep it in a safe place, it is special.
I hope you are proud of your work, I am.

*This is a 2 week lesson
Hello Artists,
You have completed your celebration cake and learned more about the artist, Wayne Thiebaud, and have written a paragraph. Now you are ready to make the cover of your journal. Use white or any colored paper you would like. Maybe poster board or whatever makes sense for you. You want it to last.
Here are the directions:
Use a ruler and put this information on the cover and center it: My Art Journal
then add below it: Your Name
below that, please add the date
**leave SPACE between the title, your name and the date and keep it all centered!
Use any kind of lettering you want. It should be done by hand. Make it all in capital letters or use block or bubble letters. Be sure to make it bold so it will stand out.
On the edges or corners or both, please use a decorative design to complete the cover. I am providing lots of examples to inspire you. Make a color plan and decide what materials you will use.
You will also need a back page. On the outside edge of the back page, decorate the edges with the same one you used for your cover. Do not staple your journal together yet.
We have another page to add in the next lesson. You should start to gather all of the pages and put them in order for the next lesson.
-Mrs. Tasho
Hello Artists,
As you work on your celebration cake, you should probably place it on a special plate to make it look complete. Or maybe you have another idea to make it look finished. Make sure your thoughtful explanation talks about how or why this celebration was or will be different because of the situation we are in.
In addition, this week you will use the link from the National Gallery of Art and read it: https://www.nga.gov/content/dam/ngaweb/Education/learning-resources/an-eye-for-art/AnEyeforArt-WayneThiebaud.pdf
Then write a paragraph on a separate sheet of paper about what impressed you most about this artist.
1 Complete drawing of cake with plate in color
2 Add your thoughtful explanation ( 3 sentences) 0n that paper with name and date
3. On a separate paper, write your paragraph from the information you learned on the National Gallery link I have provided
This work is due on May 22.

*This is a two week assignment
Hello artists!
The theme for this drawing centers around celebrations. Lot of celebrations happen around this time of year. Although your celebrations may not be done in the usual way right now, celebrations often include some common things, like sweets! Maybe cakes and pies, ice cream and candy?
There is a very popular artist, Wayne Thiebaud, who paints all kinds of sweets. Take a look and see what he does.
Here is your assignment:
Draw a cake as tall as the paper ( maybe it has 3 layers, or more! )
Use white paper with no lines
Use any materials you would like to complete this cake in color
Include patterns and decorations you would use to make this cake special Maybe use some of Wayne’s ideas on your own cake!
Write your thoughtful explanation about a celebration that you will have soon, or just had. Explain how it will be different this year.
Have fun!

REMINDER: If you have not sent your three completed journal assignments, please send them now.
Hello everyone!
You are on the second week of this lesson. I hope you noticed that we are doing this journal entry with more specific directions, based on the work of Roy Lichtenstein. He drew everything with a bold, black line (maybe he added it after). He also added patterns to many spaces in the picture. His bedroom scene is also done in color.
Go back and read the directions to make sure you don’t miss anything. Be sure to set up your page the same way with your name and date and the thoughtful explanation about why you chose that particular space to draw. Your picture may not be a bedroom, that's ok. We are just using Roy LIchtenstein's work as an example.
4 points to remember as your completing your assignment:
Completed drawing is in color
Every line is black and bold
Patterns are used somewhere in the picture
You are working in the same style as Roy Lichtenstein
This assignment should be completed and emailed to me by Friday, May 8. My email is: Jtasho@tcabrockton.org
Let me know if you have questions or if I can help in any way.
-Mrs. Tasho
ATTENTION UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS: When I first set up this online Art Classroom, I asked you to keep all your assignments in a safe place until we were back together again. Unfortunately we still are unable to be back in the classroom so I am going to ask you to submit pictures of your completed assignments to me via email.
I will leave instructions in the weekly assignment indicating when you will need to submit your work. Please check the updated assignments for specific instructions and due dates to submit.
Hello everyone! Welcome back.
A quick reminder before we get into this week's lesson:
You should have already sent your 3 completed journal drawings with a thoughtful explanation related to this unusual set of circumstances. If not, please send them now. Also, please remind fellow classmates to check the art website for their assignments. https://sites.google.com/view/tcabrockton-art/home
Now, let's get started with this week's lesson. We will concentrate on your space or place where you spend most of your time. In many cases this may be where you sleep, study or where you just hang out.
Vincent Van Gogh made a painting of his space called The Bedroom. As you can see, there are groups (three items can be a group) of items in this room. For instance, the items on the table are a group. The window and table and chair could be a group. Things in groups are close together and sometimes overlap. A group can have more than three items.
To start your assignment, take two or three photos of a group of items in your space. Choose which group you want to draw and write a thoughtful and thorough explanation about why you made this choice. Looking at the photo should help you decide which composition looks best.
Now take a look at Roy Lichtenstein’s art that was based on Van Gogh’s idea. Van Gogh has used oil paint in a painterly style while Lichtenstein’s painting seems like it was almost drawn with markers. The contrast in his style, or way of painting, is almost humorous. He also adds a lot of patterns everywhere!
You are now ready to begin your drawing in the style of Roy Lichtenstein. Since he uses a lot of black outlining, I encourage you to use a black marker for that purpose.
REMEMBER:
A group of three items from your space
This is done with color, not black and white The outlining can be black marker, or a black pen
You are including patterns Same page setup as always with explanation
This is a 2 week project. I will add some comments and expectations on this art website next week.
Have fun!
-Mrs. Tasho
Hello Students! The middle school classes are still working on the same project. It will be fun to share when the time comes. So, here we go!
*This is the second week of the third journal drawing in your story.
Hello Grade 7,
You are completing your third journal page this week. Please review the directions that I gave you last week for this assignment. It is important to pay attention to your explanation of what you drew and why you chose it.
It should be connected to something you have noticed or paid attention to, particularly because you are confined to home while you are pursuing your school work. Please be sure your explanation is clear and easy to read. This week you are required to provide AT LEAST 3 sentences, feel free to include more!
● All THREE journal drawing assignments and the first assignment about architecture (that was part of your packet) are due on Friday, April 17.
To submit your assignments: Please take a picture of each assignment and attach all 4 images in ONE email. My email is: jtasho@tcabrockton.org
Enjoy your vacation. Be sure to check this website on Monday, April 27, for your next assignment.
-Mrs. Tasho
We are on our third lesson for the journal we are creating. I sent you all an email last week with a reminder to check the art website and further suggestions as you complete parts of this visual journal we are making. *This is a 2 WEEK assignment.
Instructions:
Photograph and AREA while standing OUTSIDE.
Then choose one object or one small part of the photograph to draw. It is important that you have a thoughtful explanation of WHY you have made this selection. For example, you decide to photograph the doorway of a house that has a flower pot on the front steps. You choose to draw the pot on those steps. Maybe this is the pot on the steps of the home where your best friend lives. You miss that friend and being able to walk up those steps to visit him/her.
Be sure to follow the same directions for name and date location ( upper left corner) and keep the drawing at least half the size of the paper.
This week, please use at least THREE sentences for your thoughtful explanation. Remember this whole idea connects to your stay at home time in this unique situation.
The three photos I have provided are paintings by the American artist, Edward Hopper. Many of his paintings have to do with the mood or feeling about a situation. There are examples here of Hopper’s paintings that could describe our three lessons. You photographed:
Inside Your House
Looking Through a Window
A Photo Taken Outside
Next week I will post reminders and suggestions for this lesson. More importantly, I will also ask you to send ONE email by April 17th with all three of these journal assignments, as well as the first assignment that went home in your packet about architecture. These FOUR assignments will then be graded.
Wishing you and your family a Happy Easter!
-Mrs. Tasho
Hello everyone! I hope you enjoyed taking photos INSIDE your home to create a memory last week. Please remember to submit that drawing according to last week’s direction and keep it in a safe place to bring to school when we return. Then we will put our photo journal together.
This week’s lesson focuses on what we are seeing THROUGH the window. As you observe your day to decide what to photograph, look out the window for inspiration. Tell a story about what you are seeing. Record the time of day. For instance, at 9:00am I observed the quiet and stillness in my yard. But what caught my eye was the bright sunshine on my backyard tree and the tree’s shadow spread across the ground. After taking a successful photo I can draw that tree with its shadow. No need to draw anything else.
Remember:
Photos are taken from looking THROUGH the window. For example, "I am inside today, it is rainy. I see a bird in a puddle on the street outside". Like last week, your instructions are to focus on a single item. So, in this case, I may choose to draw the bird in the puddle. Enlarge the area you want to draw for a better view.
Draw in black and white or color if you would like. No markers. Always use the same size paper Set the paper up the same way EVERY time.
Name and date in top left corner Under the drawing write an explanation of what you photographed ( what situation you observed) and a description of what you drew.
Hope you enjoy this week's recording of a memory through drawing.
-Mrs. Tasho
The Project: Grab your phone to take a picture/pictures to record a memory of something very simple or funny or just something cool looking that catches your eye. It could be…...my little brother eating the SAME cereal, out of the SAME bowl (that’s what he does).
Once you have a picture you like, use it for reference to draw one object from that photo. In this case, you may want to draw the bowl, maybe with the spoon and a spill on the table. (Don’t draw everything in the photo).
Use a pencil or ballpoint pen or do it in color if you have materials. Each week following, I will give you a prompt about where to place your focus. Once you have completed the drawing, please write a caption or small explanation beneath it to explain the moment when you photographed the picture.
Remember, you are focusing on a single item to draw from the whole photo. If you would like to share a photo of your drawing to my school email, please do! But remember to keep your original drawing in a safe place. When all the drawings are complete at the end of this time away, you will be asked to put them together like a book or a journal. So, be sure to keep them safe and in good shape.
Materials: White paper of any kind or size that you have (it shouldn’t be smaller than 6”x9”)
Pencil or ballpoint pen is fine if you are drawing in black and white.
Colored pencils would work also.
I ask that markers NOT be used. They tend to show through the paper.
Instructions: The first drawing is done from a photo you have taken INSIDE your home. Draw the item or items using most of the space on the paper. Put the date in the top left corner and put your caption UNDER the drawing.
Finally, this is not a cartoon assignment. You are drawing what you see in the photograph.
I hope you have fun creating some great memories. Remember, I am here if you have any questions, you can reach me by email.
