This final week will be given as time for questions about finishing lessons and to catch up on work already assigned. Grades close on June 12 at the end of the school day. I cannot accept any work after this time.
This has been a challenging situation for everyone. I am so proud of the students who have put in so much effort and have made great creative choices when completing their lessons. It was a pleasure to review your artwork.

Hello Artists!
The theme for this drawing centers around celebrations. Lot of celebrations happen around this time of year. Although your celebrations may not be done in the usual way right now, celebrations often have some common things. Most of these things are sweets like cake and pie, ice cream and candy.
There is a very popular artist, Wayne Thiebaud, who paints all kinds of sweets. Take a look at this video to see some of his work:
Here is your assignment:
Draw a cake as tall as the paper ( maybe it has 3 layers, or more! )
Use white paper with no lines
Use any materials you would like to complete this cake in color
Include patterns and decorations you would use to make this cake special
Maybe use some of Wayne's ideas in your drawing
Write your thoughtful explanation about a celebration that you will have soon, or just had. Explain how it will be different this year.
Please submit a picture of your assignment to me via email, by June 8th! (Jtasho@tcabrockton.org)
Have fun!

*This is week 2 of a 2 week lesson.
Hello Grade 5,
You have been adding groups of things to grocery shelves that are different sizes and shapes. Did you put labels on the items? Or pictures? Are you seeing patterns of the repetition of many items being repeated? You know all about patterns. We have used that idea many times.
As you complete the coloring with whatever materials you would like, make sure the items stand out. Bright color or outlining light coloring makes objects stand out. Remember, your picture is not complete until all spaces are filled in. Do you have a floor space to finish or any background? Check and see.
Please email your finished work, as always, to: jtasho@tcabrockton.org

Hello Grade 5 Artists,
Let’s think about what we have learned so far from the lessons on the website.
You built three buildings from containers that you completed on all sides. You used symmetry for the cathedral and you arranged the buildings and added some details. In the next lesson you used ingredients that you would need to make a meal and arranged them in a group, some in front and some in back of each other. Then you drew that group of items. That is called a "still life".
This lesson will be about putting objects of different sizes and shapes in rows. When you put lots of things in rows you make patterns. Think about what the shelves of the grocery store look like. They might look like the ones that the illustrator, Guy Laroche, made for a children's book called General Store. Look here:
Here is your assignment:
Use white paper held horizontally and any materials you would like ( use color please, if possible).
First put yourself in the picture but not a front view. We already did a lesson in school with a backpack so you know how to draw yourself from the back.
Draw 3 shelves all across the paper and fill the shelves with groceries. Use some of your own ideas and borrow some ideas from the picture. The shapes and sizes should be different. Look in your pantry at home and draw some of those things if you would like.
When you finish the drawing you can start to add the color. Next week I will give you some reminders and a few details to complete. Let me know if you have any questions.
Have fun filling up the shelves.

*This is week 2 of a 2 week project.
Hello artists!
By now you should have drawn all of your ingredients that you arranged in a group. Maybe some containers have labels. The picture probably has several colors too. Make sure you added the table line.
This week we will get creative and design a tablecloth for the table. Henri Matisse painted a lot of Still Life pictures, but more importantly, he loved patterns. You can see the painting he made of fruit on the table here. And check out the patterns. Wow! I think that is a curtain there, to the sid... and through the window is a tree with lots of leaves that make another pattern.
Remember:
Add a table line Add a tablecloth with a pattern
Add another pattern somewhere in the picture
Make it colorful, like Matisse
Fill in all of the spaces for a completed picture
Email me a picture of your assignment by Friday, May 15 to: jtasho@tcabrockton.org

REMINDER: At this time you should send a picture of your completed Structures project to my email: jtasho@tcabrockton.org . This project included lessons 1 through 5.
Hello Grade 5 Artists!
What’s for dinner, or lunch, or breakfast? I bet you have been involved either watching or helping to make a meal at home. The first thing you need to do to start your assignment is to find the ingredients to make the meal you chose. Take these things and place them in a group. Don’t line them up. A group means some are in front and others in back. You know this! This is called overlapping.
Draw the group of ingredients you need to make the recipe. Some artists take a picture of what they want to draw and work on it later. Maybe you could do this. Please name your drawing. Tell me what the meal will be. This is what my group of ingredients looks like.
Materials and Instructions:
White paper held horizontally
Choose whatever materials you would like to use ( this is done in color)
Drawing with a pencil first is helpful so that you can erase things you don’t like
You will need to add a table line ( be sure to “jump” over the ingredients when you add the line on each side of this group).
Next week I will give you the final instructions to complete this project.
Have fun!
-Mrs. Tasho
Hello Grade 5. I hope you enjoy this project! It will be a long term project. I will add information each week on this art web page with directions on how to grow your community by adding more structures.
Hello Grade 5 Builders and Architects,
You are completing your community this week by putting all of the details on your final building, a church or cathedral. Be sure that all of your buildings have the necessary doors, windows and other details so that everyone can identify them. Check out the picture of Notre Dame for some very fancy details!
Once you are finished, arrange all three buildings the way you want them in the community. Maybe you have some toy cars you can put on the road in front of the building. Or maybe some lego people, trees or ??? Look around and see if you have anything you would like to add that would complete the area around the buildings. It might be fun.
When it is all set up take a photo of your work and send it. Remember, this is a sculpture. Send as many pictures you think you need to so the front and back can be seen. You did a lot of work. Show it off!
You have an assignment that came home in a packet from school when we left. Please also send that work along with your community project on or before the due date, May 1st.
To submit your assignments, please email the photos of your work/assignments to me at: jtasho@tcabrockton.org
I hope you had a nice break.
-Mrs. Tasho
*This assignment is a two week project.
You are already familiar with drawing churches and maybe even a cathedral. The last building for your community will be a cathedral that you create with symmetry. As you have already learned in class before, a butterfly is the perfect example of symmetry.
A very famous cathedral located in Paris, France is called Notre Dame. Please watch this short video about Notre Dame Cathedral , it will be very helpful for this project. Take a look here before you begin:
Although you are not required to do this during vacation, you may want to get a head start. Your entire group of buildings (3) will be due on May 1. At that time, I would like you to send me a picture/pictures of the three buildings you have completed. Don’t be shy... show all your work from front and back. After all, it is a sculpture!
Instructions:
Build a church or cathedral of your own. Use Notre Dame or the church you attend for inspiration. Start with the center part of the church, a shape similar to your second building. Then add another section to the left and a matching one to the right. Matching will make it symmetrical, right?
Adding the details are really important to identify the building. Shapes of church doors, archways, special shaped and some colored (stained glass) windows, spires ( pointed tops) and crosses are some suggestions.
Be creative. Remember that symmetry is what the lesson is all about.
Check back here on April 27 for some reminders about this project.
If you would like to read a story about Notre Dame Cathedral, there is an awesome illustrated book available online here:
Read The Girl and the Cathedral online!
I hope you enjoy it!

Hello Grade 5 Architects and Builders,
This is your second week of working on the second sculpture. You should be half way through your second building which you need to build with two containers stacked.
I hope you are coming up with some really creative solutions for all of the details you will add to make it your own. Keep looking and saving interesting papers and containers for our last structure and make a color plan for everything you do. Don’t forget texture, something like sandpaper would be interesting to use.
Check the website next week for your last building instructions. In the meantime, if you have finished your second building, try to find some information about the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. It will help you on our last assignment on sculpture.
Can't wait to see what you've done. Happy Easter!
- Mrs. Tasho
Hello everyone! I hope you have completed your first building with a single box and had fun adding all the details to make it your own creation Send me a picture if you can via email, I'd love to see what you've done! You have two weeks to complete this next part of the assignment, details are below.
Here is the focus this week:
I have included a picture of a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, a famous American architect above. It is actually his home! The Guggenheim Museum in New York City was also designed by him. It’s fantastic! You can learn a little bit about Frank Lloyd Wright and the building of the Guggenheim Museum here: Frank Lloyd Wright - Building the Guggenheim Timeline
Please create your building/house with TWO containers. Not all buildings are rectangles! Use the containers you have collected and try different combinations. When you have decided what looks balanced, go ahead and complete this structure by taping the two containers together.
Did you find any unusual things to complete the doors and windows, or roof? Are you color planning ? As your community grows, how will the colors of the buildings/houses look when they are grouped? Make sure your building is completed on ALL sides. This is a sculpture.
Make you sure you choose box/container sizes that are not too large so that storing your project is manageable.
Miss you all!
-Mrs. Tasho
Instructions: We are going to do a paper/cardboard sculpture of a community. Start saving boxes from cereals, boxed rice, mac and cheese or even the tall round oatmeal container. The styrofoam from meat and vegetable packing could also be used as well. Collecting different size boxes will make your community interesting. Search for other options. You will come up with some great finds! Your community can be your neighborhood, New York City, or... ????
Use an empty food box, whatever you can find, to begin. Think about the size and shape and what kind of building it will be. Then decide if the outside is made from brick, stone, or wood. Plan your windows, door (what kind, size, shape?) etc.
Turn your box into a building or house by cutting the shapes you need to cover the box all over with paper. You can cut your shapes or tear them.
You can use any paper you have. Be creative. Use old magazines, flyers, newspaper ads, leftover wrapping paper, gift or store bags, etc. Think about papers with texture.
Start collecting and have fun. Remember to check back next week for the next steps!
