Pedro Laurenz (1902–1966) was a virtuoso bandoneón player, composer, and orchestra leader whose innovative style helped shape the rhythmic and melodic character of tango in the 1930s and 1940s. His orchestras were known for strong, clear rhythmic drive, intricate bandoneón phrasing, and a lively, danceable energy. Signature tracks such as Amurado, Milonga de mis Amores and Paisaje (vals) highlight his mastery of both melodic elegance and compelling rhythm, making his music a favorite on the milonga floor.
Laurenz’s recorded legacy includes under 100 tracks, primarily from the 1930s through the 1950s.
DJ opinion: Pedro Laurenz was ahead of his time with sophisticated, rich, and powerful arrangements that are especially adored by advanced dancers. The only downside is the relatively small number of recordings available, but his music is a must-play for any serious tango playlist.
