Osvaldo Fresedo (1897–1984) was a pianist, composer, and orchestra leader known for his elegant, refined style that catered to the sophisticated salons and dance halls of Buenos Aires. His orchestras emphasized smooth, lyrical melodies, subtle rhythms, and a polished sound, making his tangos particularly suited for graceful, flowing dancing. Notable tracks like Despues Del Carnaval, Cordobesita, and Vuelves showcase his mastery of delicate phrasing and tasteful orchestration, blending strings, piano, and bandoneóns with understated elegance. Even though this orquestra has produced valses and milongas as a DJ I consider them far from optimal to put on a dance floor.
Fresedo’s recorded legacy is substantial, with over 750 recordings spanning from the 1920s to the 1960s.
DJ opinion: Osvaldo Fresedo is sweet, romantic, and fluid. While some dancers adore his pieces, others tend to skip them. Many of his tracks have a cinematic feel—likely influenced by his tours in the USA—but I find them perfect for cooling down the dance floor after energetic milonga tandas.
