While foundational drills (Article 5.1) train the body to achieve structural Sōng (鬆, loosening/releasing), this state is meaningless unless it can be maintained under pressure. This article explains how deep release and the resulting structural unity enable the three primary, instantaneous martial skills of Taijiquan (太極拳). Sōng is not passive floppiness; it is the active preparedness that allows the integrated structure to function perfectly under duress.
Deep Sōng is the critical prerequisite for listening energy. When the body is relaxed and free of internal muscular noise, the nervous system and fascial layers become exquisitely sensitive receivers.
The Sensitive Receiver: The mind (Yi, Intent) uses the stillness created by Sōng to focus on the point of contact. This allows the practitioner to accurately perceive (Tīng Jìn) the direction, weight, and intent of an opponent's incoming force, treating the skin and fascia as a highly sophisticated sensor.
The Role of Emptiness: The structure must be empty (Xū), open to receive and process information without automatically reacting or pushing back. Any internal tension creates "static," making it impossible to truly hear the opponent's force.
A deeply released structure allows for immediate and effortless redirection.
The Zero-Point: Sōng creates a momentary "zero-point" in the practitioner's body—a state of perfect yielding emptiness. Incoming force passes through this zero-point without meeting active resistance.
Neutralization: This yielding allows the practitioner to instantaneously Huà (neutralize or redirect) the attack by blending with and guiding the incoming force along a circular path, rather than opposing it. Because no energy is wasted on internal bracing, the neutralization is smooth, continuous, and requires minimal effort, preventing the practitioner from getting "stuck" or collapsing.
Paradoxically, maximal power is achieved not through muscular contraction, but through the release of the integrated structure.
The Critical Instant: Sōng is the critical instant just before Fā Jìn (issuing power). The body is fully relaxed and aligned, connecting all the joints from the ground to the point of contact.
The Release of Power: The rapid, momentary release of the entire body (from the ground up) creates the necessary "slack" in the system. This "slack" is then immediately filled by the rising ground force (Jin 勁), which travels through the unified fascial network to the point of contact, resulting in efficient, whole-body power without rigid muscular effort. (This dynamic is detailed further in the Sōng-Jin Dialectic, Article 4.3).
