Please be patient.
Makerspace Orientation/Procedures (Get a link to Cody's copy so this stays current)
1) There will be zero tolerance for horseplay, running, or throwing things. It is a safety issue.
2) When entering the makerspace, do so quietly and find an area for your group to sit.
3) Plan your project and figure out your material list first. Only your identified gatherer person will gather materials and supplies from the racks.
4) Identified gatherers may roam to other groups and ask them if they are done using supplies that are limited.
5) No hands will go up above the red line on the supply racks. If supplies are empty, ask Mr. English to get you more.
6) When you are done using your supplies, return them to the proper container or spot in storage area. 7) All gatherers are responsible for the supply rack’s cleanliness and organization.
8) Everything from the metal cart must checked out with Mr. English.
9) Leave your area cleaner than you received it.
10) No supplies or materials will ever extend above or beyond the glass!!!
11) Respect the MakerSpace area and supplies. This is YOUR area, and any theft or damage to the supplies only detracts from your fellow classmates. Don’t be the one!
12) HAVE FUN!!!!!
Maximizing Your Makerspace Time:
- Complete what you can the day in advance to maximize time in the Makerspace Studio the day that you are scheduled:
- Review the procedures.
- Have students group up so that doesn't take time the day you go.
- Review instructions and review the available materials list.
- Create a drawing of plans.
- Make a list of materials needed for each group's project. Designate who will be in charge of materials.
- Focus on creating on the scheduled day. Make regular laps letting kids know how much time they have left. Build in a minimum of 5 to 10 minutes for clean-up. If some groups have their clean-up completed encourage them to help other groups.
- Set a firm tone and enforce it. If there is any horseplay at all have kids sit out and write about proper Makerspace behavior or other appropriate consequences.
- Encourage all student to line up at the door quietly before exiting into the hall to set the tone. They get very excited, and excessive noise in the library is not welcome by learners below.
- Emphasize safety. We had one maker get a finger burn from the hot glue gun. It might not be a bad idea to track incidents to prevent injuries in the future. Kids need to be super careful not to let anything fall down to the lower level. There is some very real risk, and as teachers we need to really enforce safety. Buildings and Grounds has given clearance, but there are clearly safety issues that need to be closely monitored. It might be worth assigning a group member to the role of safety.
Reflections:
Apply Engineering Design Process. Consider going through the reflection process of evaluating and revising the day after your visit.
Encourage creators to display their work in your classroom.
Cody may meet up with EI classes in the classroom to kick-off the day.
