In the summer of 2021, I was given the opportunity to be a paid intern as a summer school teacher and work with children ranging from ages 6-11 for 5 hours a day, all with different education levels and struggles. With the students, we mainly worked in the library where we would do group read alouds, book clubs, and even used technology for the students to display their knowledge over the book they read. This internship gave me first hand experience of working with different tiered students and taught me how to creatively better their education, in order to seek utmost success for these students.
In the summer of 2022, I was given the opportunity to come back to NISD summer school as a teacher for grades ranging from 1st to 5th, teaching both math and ELA. This was a short, 4-week program where students came to learn from 8 am to 12 pm and then 12 pm to 4 pm Monday through Friday.
In the summer of 2023, I was given the opportunity to be a paid summer school teacher through the organization "Generation Teach". This has been one of my greatest teaching opportunities because not only did I get the chance to operate a classroom (for multiple periods) by myself, but I was able to work with students who usually do not get extra educational access, such as summer school, for 100% free.
