Kara or Kaiu (Calla Lilies)

Calla Lilies (Kara or Kaiu)

These beautiful flowers originally came from South Africa. They typically bloom in Japan in May to June. The main part of the large flower is trumpet shaped, flaring upward. It comes in a variety of colors including green, pink, purple, yellow, and orange, but the most common color is white. At the base of the flower is a spadex, a fleshy stem covered by tiny yellow flowers. The rich green leaves are shaped like arrowheads. Some have white or silver speckles.

Calla lilies are often used in flower arrangements and are associated with weddings and death and has other possible meanings, too.
