Demonstration Painting: Ox

To start, I have two kanji characters below for those who would like to  practice their calligraphy skills. Both are for ushi, but the first is the kanji exclusively used with jūnishi and the second is the ushi kanji for all other purposes.

Following is an ushi sketch.

My demonstration painting has a young person walking with an ox on a leash and carrying a haraegushi, a staff with a shide attached. The haraegushi is used in Shinto purification rituals. The shide is a zig-zag paper streamer. There are several different styles.

Shide are often hung from shimenawa, ropes made from rice straw that are also used for purification purposes. Most shimenawa are much smaller than the one shown below. The shide hung from this one look tiny in comparison.

Here is my demonstration painting. I used the kōrokutensai-hō technique, the combination of senbyō-hō and mokkotsu-hō, for this painting.
