Sea and Shore

I've recently purchased StaffPad for composition and noticed a competition on the theme of things we miss about being outside.

I already had a sketch of a piece about the sea so I used that with the tools and libraries in StaffPad. The piece uses ambigous tonality and is in 5/8 but with multiple tuplets of not-5 to the bar to give the whole thing an impressionistic feel, fitting the theme of waves, wind and mucking about on the beach!

It also let me get away with chords that would have clashed too much if notes were to enter at the same time, so they are often offset and overlapping, just like waves are. I had the general ideas of shore and sea vistas, crashing waves, waves pulling back the shingle, wind etc. So I wrote the music first then looked around for video to fit it and edited it together in DaVinci Resolve.

Listen out for the wind machine, choir, and a rainstick used for the effect of shingle being pulled back by the waves.
