What do we do on the team during preseason?
Our new students get to learn how to program, build, and design, as well as get familiar with the rest of the veteran students for the main season. Our business team works on recruiting sponsors, updating social media, setting up community outreach events, and writing newsletters.
What do we do on the team during mainseason?
After FIRST releases the game in early January, our team begins to work on prototyping, designing, building, programming, and coding the robot. Each member will choose a subteam to work in and get things to do from either the subteam leader or the main team captain. Other students will work on memorizing presentations, writing essays, and presenting to the community.
Can I still be in robotics if I am in other clubs/sports?
Yes, our team can accommodate your schedule if you are in other activities. We have had members in track, cross country, swim, and softball! Our team wants to include anybody interested in engineering, programming, designing, and writing. We do have hour requirements in the shop, but if you talk to one of our coaches about your activities.
Do I have to pay to get into robotics?
Our members have to raise $200 each through fundraising, sponsors, or other methods to have their costs of going to competition covered . During the season, Our team holds multiple fundraising opportunities for our members so they can reach the goal. However, if any of our members are struggling or need financial aid, they can talk to our coaches and we can accommodate your budget.
What are all the different subteams I can join on the team?
Our team is composed of three main teams and four subteams. The three main teams are the robot team, the competition team, and the business team.
The Robot team is in charge of the electrical, programming, mechanical, and CAD. This subteam will work on designing, building, programming, and coding the robot.
The Competition team consists of game management, scouting, safety, and spirit. Mainly, they are in charge of everything game-related, whether that's going over the game rules or talking to other teams.
The Business team is in charge of the subteams documentations and communications, traveling and accounting, awards, and community service. They work on creating presentations, writing essays, and reaching out to the community.
Do parents need to be involved?
Parents are always welcome to be involved with our team, however, they are only required to come to a few meetings. During main season, parents are expected to bring at least one meal in for the team. We will have a sign-up sheet posted sometime after winter break so that you can sign up for times that are convenient for your schedule. Since we also have Saturday practices, you can also bring in lunch!
Do I need to have any experience with robotics or machinery to join the team?
No, our team has a variety of people, those with lots of experience, and those without it. Regardless of how familiar you are with tools and engineering, all of our members have to go through safety training, where we teach new students and reteach veteran members how to work the machines to ensure everyone understands what they are doing in the shop and no one gets hurt.
What type of things will I learn on the team?
Our members not only learn how to program, code, build, and design robots, but they also learn how to collaborate, lead, and compromise. Our team does many community outreach projects, so our members also get the opportunity to connect with the area!
What time are the practices/When do I need to be there?
During the preseason, our practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-6:30 PM. On Saturdays, practices are held from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM. During the main season, our practices become more frequent; we have practices from 3:30 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On Saturdays, our practices are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. However, our members don't need to come to every single one of our meetings, they just have to get a certain hour requirement each season. In the preseason each member has an hour requirement of 20 hours. During the main season, depending on your subteam, you have different hour requirements. Some teams have to be there for 80 hours, and some for 120. Our shop is open for more than 200 hours, so there are many opportunities for our students to meet their hour requirements.
What is FIRST?
FIRST stands for "For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology", and we participate in their competitions. They are a global organization that wants to spread STEM and robotics to younger generations. For more information, go to the "FIRST" tab on our website, or click here!
