The article analyzes drawings by Severin Obst from the book “Views of Household Crafts. Metal Products of Villagers in Rus” (1882)
In the book “Wzory przemysłu domowego. Wyroby metalowe włościan na Rusi” (Ludwik Wierzbicki, Seweryn Obst, 1882) contains drawings of metal products of Hutsul masters of metalwork.
The author of the drawings, Seweryn Leopold Obst (29 December 1847, Nizhniy Bereziv - 2 January 1917, Lviv), was a Polish artist, painter, graphic artist, illustrator, and ethnographer.
Since childhood, Seweryn Obst was fond of the Hutsul region, so he settled there for several years. He lived in Zhabia and Yaremche. He painted Hutsuls, was engaged in ethnography, and collected a number of folk art pieces. At this time, he created two voluminous albums of sketches of decorative motifs of Hutsul folk art (mosyazhnytsia, carving, embroidery, weaving, pysanky, and more).
In 1883, Severin Obst moved to Lviv. In Lviv, he rented an apartment in an office building at 7 Ossolynskich Street in Lviv (now Stefanyka Street, 7-A).
The vice president of the Industrial Museum in Lviv, Leopold Verbytskyi, invited Severin Obst to design the books “Views of Household Crafts” (“Metal Products of Peasants in Rus”, “Embroidery of Peasants in Rus”, “Clay Products of Peasants in Rus (Kosiv and Sokal)”) of the Industrial Museum in Lviv.
In addition, Severin Obst's drawings were included by Volodymyr Shukhevych in his work “Hutsulshchyna“.
