The Radar Tower was originally an upgrade of the Sensor Tower. It was a structure that automatically scanned for enemy units and buildings in its range. It also emitted an alarm as soon as enemy units were detected within its wide radius. Units appeared as a red exclamation mark on the map in the fog of war. Radar Towers were also crucial for Missile Turrets since only Radar Towers were able to grant the Detector ability to them. Position and sensing radius were both visible for every player on the map. Although the initial Radar Tower was upgraded from a Sensor Tower, it was changed to fully replace it. The new version had the almost exact appearance and abilities as the Sensor Towers have now. It was renamed before the official Beta started.
The Starbase was a Terran building, upgraded from a Starport. It was able to produce Terran air units while lifted off or flying. The Starbase was canceled in the early alpha stage of the game. It also had the ability Re-Arm which restored energy to a nearby unit. The Starbase still needed a Tech Lab (that still had the Salvage ability) to produce some units.
The star base was seen at BlizzCon 2007 but has since been canceled, because it was not very essential to Terran gameplay and left several tech labs around the map. Its abilities also made it overpowered
The Merc Starport resembles the Starbase.
The Planetary Fortress used to be an independent structure enabled by the Factory. In regards to Command Center variants, most work went into the Planetary Fortress, with the results effectively being ported to the Orbital Command, which was designed later. It used to have lift off properties, but it was ultimately decided to keep it as a grounded structure.
When revealed in 2007, the Planetary Fortress fired quicker, weaker shots. At one point, it lost splash damage before regaining it by November 2008. In April 2009, its stats were increased to 40 damage and 6 range. StarCraft II beta patch 11 changed the splash damage to originate from the center of the Planetary Fortress's target, rather than the impact location near the unit.
The Drop Pod Facility was a Terran structure in the StarCraft 2 beta. It was originally designed to be a add on for the Barracks/Starport/Factory so the player could orbital drop units onto the set rally point of those structures. It was later replaced by the orbital strike research in the Wings of Liberty campaign.
The Merc Compound was once called the Merc Haven and Munitions Dump. It was used to train Reapers, which worked similarly to hiring units from mercenary camps in WarCraft III. There was a maximum number of units "in stock" at any one time with that number slowly regenerating over time. Reapers were inexpensive with a build time of one or two seconds. Four Reapers could be bought from a single Merc Haven in quick succession with another reaper becoming ready to "hire" every thirty seconds
The structure also upgraded Marines at one point. By November 2008, the Merc Haven was removed, and the model repurposed for a bar in the StarCraft II campaign. It returned as of April 2009, but ultimately did not appear in the Wings of Liberty beta. Beta files list it as the "mercenary port.
Above the old Merc Haven was a holographic woman doing the female night elf dance from Blizzard's World of Warcraft, itself inspired from Alizée's J'en ai Marre dance.
