We are grateful to our past partner, Kennard-Dale High School FFA, for their assistance in picking up trash along Telegraph Rd. for 10 years from 2009 - 2019.
If your group is interested in helping the environment and making our community cleaner by partnering on a road clean-up, please contact us and we would be glad to work together with you.
This year, we plan to study the water quality in 3 - 6 local streams and tributaries and we invite you to join us! Last year's studies found all of the streams that we examined to be in good health! The team analyzes the type and quantities of macroinvertebrates present in our streams to determine if the water quality is excellent, good or fair. The variety and quantity of species being observed varies with the time of the year that sampling is completed. Stream studies are a fun reason to get in the stream, pick up rocks to look for macros, and make some observations about how the stream health is doing. We also check the water temperature and look for any unusual conditions that may be present. Our studies give us a "snapshot" of the stream's health at that particular point in time. It's a fun activity and kids are welcome, as they really seem to enjoy it!
Below are two completed surveys for 2018 - good results! We intend to complete additional surveys and post the results on the website.
Big Branch SOS results May 30, 2018:
Quality = Excellent
IWLA Un-named Trib SOS results May 30, 2018:
Quality = Good
This spring get out and enjoy some fishing in Phil Pond or on Big Branch. Just remember that the fish caught in the pond are catch and release. Walk the trail beyond the inlet end of the pond and visit the stream restoration project that was completed in the fall of 2013. Our thanks to Jim Morris and Ecotone Inc. for a job well done!
We completed a fall clean-up on October 24 with a great group of students from Kennard-Dale FFA. Their picture is below and if you look closely, you'll even see an oversized Minion in the back row!
Sportsman's IWLA wants to thank the High School students from Kennard-Dale's FFA Chapter for helping with our road clean-ups for the past seven years! Congratulations on being awarded the IWLA Maryland Division Honor Roll Award for 2016.
GREAT JOB Kennard-Dale FFA!
Thanks to all who participated!
