The South road from Bonniedale farm was not much better that the North road. It got better the further one drove. After about 10km the farm road became a Forestry road and was in much better condition. Now I could ride in 3/4 gear instead of 1/2 gear. Hagelkraal Pass was the first pass of the day and kept me in the lower gears. Traffic started appearing that also required carefull routing through tight bends. It had taken 1.5hrs to cover the 27km. As I approached the R328 I saw the padstall with a huge BREAKFAST sign (Ruiterbos Farmstall). I grabbed the opportunity to stock up my water and enjoy a good breakfast. The owner came to asked where I was from so we ended having a good conversation, and discussed a solar system they want to install.
I turned North onto the R328 road that leads through the Robinson's Pass and the Brakpoort Pass. After travelling through the beautiful Robinson's Pass, the Brakpoort Pass is adsolutely insignificant by comparison. After crossing through the Outenique mountains I was back in the Karoo and the temperature increased. I turned South onto the Gravel road which is about 3km after the Brakpoort Pass.
This gravel road takes you through the Leopoort Pass and joins the N12. I turned North and about 2km further I turned onto a gravel road. After 7.7km there is a 4-way intersection. I turned South to travel through the Paardepoort Pass. The road lead me to the N9.
I crossed the N9 and continued to Herold to travel the old Montagu Pass. Soon after Herold there was a big sign the indicated the pass was closed. Large concrete blocks were used to block the road and one had been moved and vehicle tracks indicated that people were using the pass.
I had just seen a small white front-wheel drive vehicle enter the pass. I therefore decided to follow the vehicle. After about 400m the vehicle stopped and a foreign tourist asked me if it was okay to travel the pass - There were 3 people in the car. I indicated I had no idea. He said he will continue but let me pass him first. The pass got considerably worse and at times there were very thin strips of drivable road suitable for pedestrians and bicycles. Only a 4x4 with good ground clearance and crazy motorbike riders can get through this without damaging their vehicle. What a beautiful pass - Very scenic and historical. The road eventually joined the N12 in George and I was back on the coastal side of the mountains and the temperature cooled down a bit.
I turned off the N12 onto Saasveld Drive (Old Seven Passes road), in George. The first section of the Seven Passes road is tar and the road was blocked off with huge concrete blocks. I squeezed past the blocks and continued. It appeared that the damage from the floods had largely been repaired so I was not sure why the road was blocked to traffic. Eventually I found out.
The last section of the tarred road was blocked off with concrete blocks and there was a huge landslide from the road to the river below. I could either retrace the path taken or figure out how to get past a 1m gap between the concrete blocks and the fall away that was at leat 30m deep. I decided to strip all the luggage off the bike, carry it to the other side and take the squeeze. Thankfully I made it. I know it was a stupid thing to do, but sometimes stupid gives positive dividends - If I had a passenger or fellow riders, I would not have taken the chance.

Charlesford Farm River Crossing
The last pass was the Phantom Pass near Knysna. The plan was to camp for 2 nights at Charlesford Farm. I arrived at Charlesford Farm in Knysna and went to the butchery to check in. The owners were very friendly. I was given directions to the camp sites about 1km up the narrow valley from the farmhouse. I had to cross a river with a base of round rocks which was rather exciting. The setting is beautiful; however the facilities were sparse with no electricity. The only reason I did not stay was because I needed electricity to recharge my phone, process photos and GPS data and write the narrative. I also had to go to Knysna to sort out my laundry and my riding boot sole that had come off again. I returned to the butchery and checked out.
Old Montagu Pass
We previously camped at Woodbourne Caravan Resort in 2011 and liked the resort. It is in easy reach of town.
The resort camping area is great and the ablusions were clean and well maintained. I had to choose a camp site closest to an electrical point as my extension cable is only 4m long. There were a number of campers who were friendly and engaged in converstation.
At night there were 3 owls that hung around camp. I am not sure what type of owl they were but I think they were Cape Eagle Owls.

I drove through to George to meet with a school friend, Mark Bosman, from my junior years. We enjoyed catching up over breakfast at The Deacon House Restaurant (https://deaconhouse.co.za/).
The rear tyre of my bike was losing pressure so I went to Eden Bike and Tyre. There was a puncture, however the tyre had reached it safety limits so a new tyre was fitted. My next stop was a grocery store to stock up on supplies.
Because my jacket & jeans were at the laundry and my riding boot was in for repairs, I did not do any gravel roads on the return trip to Knysna.
Once I got back to Knysna, I collected my laundry and riding boot before heading back to camp. On the way to camp, I stopped off at the Bosun's Arms restaurant (https://web.facebook.com/Bosunspub/?_rdc=1&_rdr) for an early dinner.
