There was heavy mist as I left Oyster Bay. I took it easy and the mist only lifted by the time I got to Paradise Beach. The Gravel roads have not been well maintained so there were lots of pot holes, corrugations and ruts.
I stopped off to visit Bruce and Shelly in Jeffrey's Bay. Their grand daughter, Gaby, was visiting. It was great to have a cup of coffee and catchup news with an old friend. I left them at 09h30 and headed for Uitenhage via van Stadens Pass. I refueled in Uitenhage and a Mr Deysel came over and started chatting about touring. He has done a lot of touring in Southern Africa but health issues stopped him.

From Uitenhage, I continued along the R75 for about 16km before turning left onto the gravel road to Steytlerville. The vegetation become more and more sparse as you head away from the coast.
I continued along the R329 from Steytlerville for about 4km before turning North onto the gravel road to Pienaarspoort Pass. By this time, storm clouds were gathering in the North and luckily I was heading away from them.

Thunderclouds were chasing me
I crossed the R338 and continued for about 8km before turning East along a farm road. This road is seldom used as there were no tyre tracks. The road followed the dry Palmiet river. I saw Kudu and Springbuck along the road. The road got narrower as I travelled and deteriorated to the point I was using the lower gears more than the high gears. At one stage I hit a 100m patch of really thick sand, where the wheels did not get grip on any firm ground. The road was a twin track and narrow which made navigation even more difficult. I really thought I would not make it through, however I kept the momentum and got through it. It felt like I had done hundreds of meters of thick sand.
I got to Jansenville and stopped to get some water as it was hot and the road navigation required some effort. By now the thunder clouds had got closer and every now and again I could feel a couple raindrops on my face. The last thing I wanted was wet gravel roads. I continued along the gravel road in an easterly direction that followed the Sundays River, which had patches of water pools. Eventually I reach a T junction and turned North and followed the Riet river that wound its way through the ravine. I must have crossed the dry river bed at least 20 times.
As I entered the Rossouwspoort Pass, I could see heavy lighting and rain on the horizon and I was heading directly for the storm. When I got to the top, is started raining. I slowed down and continued as there was no point stopping. I only had about 40km to go. Luckily, it had not rained that hard so there were no pools of water or running water. The last 10 km was dry as the rain storm had passed and by the time I got to Turksvygrivier camp, I was dry.
The Turksvygrivier camp is located in a very dry area and therefore the camp sites consist of fine gravel. This is practical as it avoids a dusty camp site.
This is a hunting farm so it is more geared to the hunting season and has a really nice communual lounge, kitchen dining room and shower and toilet. The camp sites are next to the communual area with a separate shower and toilet.
I decided to pitch my camp under the tree close to the communual area. As I started unpacking, the ants attacked me. The larger black ants had a vicious bite. I checked the rest of the camping area and the ants were everwhere. The owner agreed that I could roll-out my sleeping bag in the communual area where there were no ants.
