This is a solo ride on my 2009 BMW R1200 GS Adventure with the intention of covering as much of the trip on gravel (unpaved) roads.
Total Distance: 4597 km
Gravel Roads: 2678 km (58%)
Tar Roads: 1917 km (42%)
Moving Average Speed: 58.69 km/h
The best gems to visit in South Africa are hidden along the gravel roads, passes and towns that most people avoid. This is the type of adventure I enjoy most because you see unbelievable scenary / landscapes, meet great South Africans carving out their living in remote areas and create awesome memories.
Most of this trip from Pretoria to the coast, along the Garden Route and back via the Lesotho Border will be on gravel roads which means slower speeds and longer travel times. This means that any Adventure / Scrambler motorbike from 200cc to over 1200cc can do the trip as cruising speeds average around 80km/h.
This adventure covered 66 passes (43 gravel and 23 tar). I consider this a great adventure as the condition and technical skills required for the gravel roads and passes were unknown at the start of the trip.
