(NOTE: Updated link) One method I use for finding breaking news about MG is Google search. Open Google browser, enter "myasthenia gravis" in the search bar, choose Web near the top, click the Tools icon, click Any time and choose Past 24 hours. If you want to skip all that, just click THIS LINK and save the page as a bookmark. Happy searching!
Possible sex and racial disparities in myasthenia gravis care (NIH) We must stop this.
Mestinon interactions: Alcohol, medications, and other factors (Medical News Today) So many of us have been taking Pyridostigmine (Mestinon, Gravitor) for quite a long time. We may have forgotten (which is normal) some of the precautions regarding the use of this vital medication. If you feel like you could use a refresher, this is a very good article to consider reading. You might be surprised (like I was) at some of the facts.
Earlier this year I mentioned a way to use Google Search to find new articles related to Myasthenia Gravis released in "the past 24 hours". There's another method to stay on top of many recently-released medical journal articles about MG using the search function at Cureus. I created THIS LINK for you that will list the articles on MG in reverse chronological order. Be sure that the "Date" triangle is pointing down. (Mike Stabile)

Two summers ago Brain&Life Magazine included a special summer issue and myasthenia gravis was the subject. This year they released, once again, another summer issue about MG. There are four article that are very well-written and informative:
Brain&Life Magazine is published quarterly by the American Academy of Neurology for the lay person and is always full of interesting articles regarding neurology and the brain. Best of all its hard copy version is FREE and mailed to you! Their website has all of their content and the page where you can subscribe to the free quarterly magazine. I highly recommend it.

Here is an article from Myasthenia Gravis News that describes a brand new and important resource for MGers everywhere and provided by the MGFA. This service has the potential to fill a hole in the care spectrum by offering many MGers much-needed, vital, and live help in dealing with their MG symptoms and challenges. Kudos to the MGFA!
Exceptionally hot and dry summer and fall, along with a potentially big fire season, is forecast for the Western U.S. I'm a weather nerd and follow the long-term forecasts and science. If you live inland from the immediate coast, I recommend that you become aware now of the upcoming potential risks and dangers to which a person with myasthenia gravis might experience (e.g., heat, smoke, isolation, etc.)
I follow one weather expert in particular, Daniel Swain (PhD.), who hosts the Weather West website. More importantly, he produces an exceptionally good YouTube channel that supports his website. Yesterday he released possibly his best video ever, and it is a detailed explanation of this article's title. If you're at all interested in a scientific-based preview of the likely upcoming summer and fall, I recommend it. I know it's a long video, but if you stick to it, it will get increasingly informative and understandable as you continue.

New Analysis Finds Millions of People on Statins May Not Need Them (Healthline) Do you take statins, for controlling cholesterol, as a preventative medicine? Also, millions of Americans (including many MGers) who don't, probably should be taking them. Either way, you might want to read this. Finally, be aware that statins may (of course! 😡) be a risk for myasthenia gravis, but also you should probably still take them. As always, our snowflake condition always makes taking drugs so complicated, so always be learning everything that you can!
Group member Frank Morrow found this superb article from Practical Neurology. As stated in its heading, it summarizes "Advances in testing and treatments for myasthenia gravis [which] are leading to more accurate diagnoses and improvements in symptom control for individuals with this rare chronic autoimmune disease." It's very readable and very current in content. I've duplicated two charts from it and put them, where applicable, in either the Common MG Drug Therapies or Open Clinical Trials sections of this website. Thank you, Frank!
Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts (FDA) Most people are aware, via news on TV, radio, newspapers and other news sources, about the occasional reports of government product recalls issued for popular items found to be dangerous. Examples include: food; children's toys, cribs, etc.; drugs; household items; automobiles; and so on. On this government website you will find all the recall reports issued by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) for most foods, drugs and related products.
MG patients with time-consuming self-care (and their caregivers) often have less time to read the news and are less likely to be aware of product recalls (we all eat, and so many of us also take lots of medications!) putting us at greater risk of harm. Also, you may see a recall for a product that you don't necessarily use, but know a friend or family member who does. Chances are good that they aren't aware and will surely appreciate your heads-up!
What I do, and suggest that you consider doing, is subscribe to the FDA's recall newsletters (look for "MedWatch Safety Alerts: FDA Safety Information", "FDA Consumer Updates", and "Recalls, Market Withdrawals and Safety Alerts" after entering your email) which are emailed to consumers on a regular basis, keeping you current on the latest recalls. Usually you can tell by the email title what the product is, saving you the time of reading the email itself if the product doesn't apply.

Here are the video recordings of several sessions of this week's MGFA 2024 National Patient Conference in Tampa, FL.
Mestinon shortage (Myasthenia Gravis News) There's increasing, anecdotal reporting of Mestinon 180 mg ER shortages (not the 60 mg version). Users might want to keep a close eye on their pharmacy's supply and be prepared to contact other area pharmacies if their primary site does report delays in filling Rxs. Also, it is very dangerous to take three 60 mg tabs at once as a replacement for the 180 mg. The 60 mg are NOT extended release (ER) and you could suffer a major reaction (cholinergic crisis) and end up hospitalized, if not worse (scroll down to "OVERDOSE" on this web page from Healthline). Definitely consider talking to your neurologist about how to best take replacement 60 mg tabs as you wait for the resupply of 180 mg.
Be sure, if you're interested in participating in an MG clinical trial, to periodically check the routinely updated list of current active trials that are recruiting, found here on the MGFA website.
The Myasthenia Gravis Association gave a presentation by Ghazala Hayat, MD, St. Louis University, about the different antibody types of myasthenia gravis, presented via MGA Virtual Monthly Meeting for August, 2023. Is Covid-19 More Severe If You Have Myasthenia Gravis?
In case you weren't aware, persons with Myasthenia Gravis (MG) are at increased risk of more severe Covid-19 complications. As noted by the CDC:
"Based on the current evidence, a person with any of the conditions listed below [which includes the immunocompromised] is more likely to get very sick from COVID-19. This means that a person with one or more of these conditions who gets very sick from COVID-19 (has severe illness from COVID-19) is more likely to: be hospitalized; need intensive care; require a ventilator to help them breathe; die."
(Please note that this is not referring to Covid-19 vaccinations. See supporting articles here, here, here and here.)
Here are links to some articles that elaborate the risks for MG patients who do get Covid-19:
What doctors wish immunocompromised patients knew during COVID-19
Predicting COVID-19 infection risk in people who are immunocompromised by antibody testing
People Who Eat More Plant-Based Meals Have a Lower COVID-19 Risk
MGFA has a webpage, CARE-MG, that describes "a joint effort of the International MG/COVID-19 Working Group and neurologists from across the globe to capture outcomes of people with MG who have developed COVID-19 infections".
Would you (or a loved one or friend) like to connect with a trained MG advocate so you can talk to them directly?

What do we know about the accuracy of online health information? Some online sources of information on complementary health approaches (such as diets, nutrition, supplements and self-care) are useful, but others are inaccurate or misleading. To help you decide the accuracy and validity of specific sources of online health care information go to this excellent review site: National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

If you are interested in following the newest research in MG then I recommend this excellent article regarding CAR-T therapy, which includes references to RNA CAR T-cell (rCAR-T) therapy — called DESCARTES-08 — currently in phase 2 clinical trials for treatment of MG: Are Cellular Therapies the Future of Autoimmune Disease? The article gives a general explanation of CAR-T therapy and the reference to MG is roughly halfway into the article.
To learn more about the use of telehealth in MG, the Myasthenia Gravis Rare Disease Network (MGNet) is conducting a pilot study, “Adapting Disease Specific Outcome Measures Pilot Trial for Telehealth in Myasthenia Gravis (ADAPT-teleMG)” (clinicaltrials.gov ID NCT05917184). The team is evaluating telehealth visits and remote disease-specific assessments for patients with MG.
Ophthalmologic Manifestations of Myasthenia Gravis (Medscape) Key takeaways: "Ninety percent of patients with myasthenia gravis develop ophthalmologic manifestations of the disease..." "... over a mean follow-up period of 17 years, approximately 15-17% of patients with MG had strictly ocular symptoms." "...82% of patients who later developed generalized weakness did so in the first 2 years after diagnosis..." "...patients who keep having strictly ocular symptoms for 3 or more years are unlikely to revert to the generalized aspect of the disease."
