The Project Slam
Hrunamannahreppur had for a long time been interested in finding a way to use the sludge that accumulates in septic tanks. They came up with the idea to use sludge close to home, instead of driving it to a landfill quite far away. The possibility of using septic tank solids for land reclamation or forestry began and a pilot project was established for that purpose. In few years, that pilot project developed so that 6 local authorities in the south joined forces and founded the Seyru project and built a treatment plant in Hrunamannahreppi.
The cooperation between Seyruverkefnið, Flúðaskóli and Holbæk Lilleskole
Flúðaskóli wanted to use the knowledge that lies in the process of the treatment plant and to be in collaboration with the plant and use it for teaching at school. In the fall of 2022, the idea came up to look for such a collaboration and emphasize integration in several subjects. In that regard, it was decided to also look for cooperation with a Danish school that would be willing to work together on projects about treatment plants. At the same time, it was obviously possible to connect the concept of sustainability with the operation of such a treatment plant, and the focus was placed on that aspect right from the beginning.
Nordplus - scolarship
Flúdaskóli decided to apply for financial support from Nordplus Junior, as such a project fits well with the main goals of Nordplus at the moment, where the attention is on social sustainability and cooperation between schools and institutions in that context. During the application process, the project was named Slam in reference to Danish, which is the Danish word for sludge and means slam. With that, it was possible to connect the name to the fact that the world was maybe experiencing a certain crisis in relation to water, water sources and water waste, and that the world was not informed enough about the importance of sustainability in that context. The project got scolarship for preparing meetings between the teachers in Flúðaskóli and Holbæk Lilleskole and the project got scolarship from Nordplus Junior for mobility.
When preparations for the project began, the main focus was on four basic elements; water use, water wastage, use of sludge as fertilizer and land reclamation. The students were given the task at the beginning of submitting questions that would be useful as research questions based on these four main focuses. Those questions have been a guiding light in the entire project, with the main focus on the connection to sustainability.
