A warrior has two main duties: to fight and to patrol. They need to be able to fight predators and enemy cats while also being skilled in hunting prey, whether that be fishing or hunting on land. To patrol well, warriors must also be observant and attentive. Tracking skills are also advantageous for both duties. Every cat may decide for themselves where they prefer to hunt, and the patrols should be structured to accommodate that. A warrior who is not on patrol may do as they please, whether that be wander the territory, scavenge for pretty items, socialize, or decompress and relax somewhere within camp.
Warriors make up the majority of the clan, often being at the whim of other ranks' needs. They're sent on frequent errands to collect items for healers, caretakers, and elders, though their apprentices bear the brunt of these duties.
Healers are among the most important members of the clan.
Wanderers are the smallest rank within the clan, only ever having as many as 3 cats among their ranks. They have a very unique and specialized job, finding themselves between the other and more popular options. As their name suggests, wanderers tend to wander around. They're trained specifically in noticing minute details and changes in the territory that typical warriors may miss. Part of their job is noticing new growths of herbs, disturbing tracks in less frequented parts of the territory, and other changes within their borders. They're also the only rank to have a duty beyond the border; rogue meetings.
The clan has a few meeting spots set up with their associated rogues and it's a wanderer's job to communicate with them and share news accordingly with the needed powers that be. Starclan's eye only watches the territory, and outside news is to come from beyond.
Caretakers are the protectors of their clan. They are trained less in fighting than warriors. but are taught the basics of defensive combat. Caretakers primarily care for the young of the clan, acting somewhat as permanent queens. That’s not their only duty, however. Caretakers maintain the camp. They keep dens in good shape, tend any plants important to Stormclan life, and ensure the walls are sound. Caretakers also act as therapists in a way, often being a shoulder to cry on for other cats.
Being a caretaker is a very respected position. Though they don’t live the glamorous lives of warriors, they have a very vital role in the clan, keeping it running well. Similarly to other roles within the clan, caretaking is not dependent on gender identity or assigned sex. Applicable cats may choose to wet nurse for orphaned kits or those who otherwise need milk for whatever reason.
Though full apprenticeship begins at 6 moons, Partial-Apprenticeships may begin as early as 4 moons old for applicable kits. Getting restless kits prepared for their training can give them a boost and allow them to build those skills so the adjustment to leaving the den is less severe. These cats can only go a little beyond the clan boundaries and practice building broad skills over more attuned ones. They keep the kit suffix until 6 moons, however. Half-paws, as they've been affectionately nicknamed by Stormclan's cats, mostly focus on learning climbing skills, the hunting crouch, lessons in coordination, and perhaps most importantly, swimming. All kits become apprentices at 6 moons old, unless ill or somehow otherwise unfit to begin training.
Apprentices are often tasked with menial work. They’re the ones who bring water from the creek to the kits and elders. During their training, they’re taught the skills they need to learn to perform their daily tasks. They will be trained completely in hunting and combat, as well as the skills needed to be a functional member of the clan. At the end of their training, their mentor and the clan leader or deputy will spectate an assessment of some kind or the apprentice will be ranked up for an unplanned event which proves them capable. Generally apprenticeship starts at 6 moons and can last anywhere between 8-10 moons after that, depending on rank and pursued skills.
Kits who want to get out of the nursery and are deemed fit to do so may be granted an early partial apprenticeship. Lovingly called Half-paws, these kits will keep their suffix until they reach the proper age of apprenticeship. Until then, they will not recieve an official mentor. Instead, they'll be given lessons by any number of volunteers, often sampling skills from the various ranks. The healers, caretakers, wanderers, and warriors may teach the kits as they please, giving them some food for thought when it comes to considering their eventual rank. They will also be taught basic lessons in small out-of-camp excursions. Swimming in the small pond near camp, climbing near a large rocky outcrop, etc. It gives the kits something to do without assuming the full dangers of apprenticeship.
Elders are cats who are too old or otherwise unfit to perform other duties. They are in a state of retirement, being cared for by the clan. Though they can’t be in other positions of power, the leader may seek them out to ask advice from the most experienced in the clan. Elders spend a lot of their time in their den but those inclined may also visit the nursery to help out.
