Officers
Mable Crouse
Hey! I’m Mabel Crouse, one of your overall captains this year! I’m a senior, and I’m proud to be heading such a great program here at skyline. I primarily compete in Lincoln Douglas debate. In my free time I love to sing, paint, collage, and do drag.
Ava Szajnuk
Hi, my name is Ava Szajnuk, and I am one of your overall captains this year!! I am currently a senior, and I have specialized in Congressional Debate since my freshman year. I love Skyline Speech & Debate with my whole heart and I am so excited to work with you all!! In my free time I like to read, write poetry, and critique public policy.
Hi, I’m Hailey Park, your assistant publicity officer for this year. As a current sophomore, my main events are extemporaneous speech and public forum. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with friends, golfing, and hunting down officers to get bios for this website.
Hi, I'm Lydia Bartholomew, and I’m a current sophomore. I’m the middle school liaison of the Skyline Debate Club and excited for a new debate season! My main event is the Public Forum debate. In my free time, I like to get boba with my friends and read.
Hi, I am Sophia Chen and in my sophomore year. I’m the middle school liason and am super excited for the new year. My main events are extemporaneous speech and public forum. I like to learn from Crayon Shin-chan, find new restaurants, and some say I embody Nailong.
Debate Captains
Eva Averin
Hi, I’m Eva Averin, one of your Public Forum captains this year. I am a junior, and captainship is something I’m incredibly looking forward to. PF is my favorite event and extracurricular, and I especially enjoy faster tech debate. I also love drawing, hiking, and reading about neuroscience.
Daniel Luo
My name is Daniel Luo, and I am one of your Public Forum Captains for this upcoming year. I am a junior, and this will be my third year as a part of the Speech and Debate team. I mostly compete in Public Forum, but I have tried several other events in the past. I like learning new things and I am looking forward to meeting everyone this year.
Jarius McCarthy
Hi, Yall. My name is Jarius McCarthy, a Senior, and I am your Policy Captain. Policy is the best event in my opinion because it gives you the most realistic understanding of how policy can interact with the rest of the systems in place. You have the most creativity and freedom out of any event (including the speech ones) and you can learn the most by debating in it. This will be my 4th year both in debate leadership and as a debater for the S&D team. When I’m not debating, I enjoy playing piano, cooking food, or playing video games. Please come to our policy labs. They’ll be hype and totally worth it. 😎😎😎
Wesley Candelaria
What’s up? I am Wesley Candelaria, a Junior and Skyline Speech and Debate member for 3 years now. I am one of Lincoln Douglas’ captains, and LD is my preferred event. Skyline is going to absolutely destroy this year, and I look forward to being a part of that. I enjoy writing, criticizing music, and, of course, debating (Speech is fire too).
Maddie Doherty
Hi everyone! I’m Maddie Doherty, one of the Lincoln-Douglas (LD) captains this year! I’m currently a Junior, going into my second year as a member of the Speech and Debate team. Outside of school I enjoy spending my time playing viola, reading, and going on walks. I’m looking forward to a great year!
Alejandro Oyazun
Hi guys! My name is Alejandro Oyarzun, and I’m your Congress captain this year! I am currently a senior and have been doing debate since my sophomore year. I’m excited to show you all how fun Congress is, and how it’s the best event by far. Community is a huge part of Congress, so you will always have a place here. In my free time, I like to climb, snowboard, and study for my EMT class.
Speech Captains
Annie Li
Hello there! I am Annie Li and currently a senior. This is my fourth year doing debate, and I have been Interpretations captain for three years. My partner and I (co-captain Mr. Jeremy Solorzano) tried this event our freshman year by coincidence and fell in love with it. Interpretation is one of the most unique and fun events that I suggest trying it out at least once. I love goofing around, eating LOTs of food, and sleeping.
Jeremy Solorzano
Selha Chazotsang
Hello! I’m Selha Chazotsang and I am in 11th grade . I will be this year’s informative captain. My hobbies include hiking, playing guitar and collecting vinyl. I’ve been doing informative since freshman year and fell in love with how unrestrictive and imaginative the event is. This school year, my main goals are to make every informative member an overall better public speaker, push them out of their comfort zones, create a platform for them to talk about what they’re passionate about, and most importantly have fun with new friends. I hope everyone’s time in informative is filled with growth, inclusion and memorable experiences!
Johnathan Chen
Johnathan is a current senior and loves networking. Three ways to describe him are enthusiastic, remarkable, and outstanding. He first began his debate journey in middle school, where he only came to annoy the debate captains. Eventually, he fell in love with extemporaneous speaking and has been competing in National Extemp for over a year. He loves to explore different events, and some of his favorites include Public Forum, Impromptu, and Panhandling. He would love to meet you, and hopes you bring Matcha!
Elisa Tandra
Hey guys! I’m a junior here at Skyline and your second Foreign Extemp captain. While FX is my main focus, NX, Informative, Interpretations, and PF are some other events I've dabbled in. My favorite part of the job is probably talking to and existing near my iconic super cool co-captain, ✨Quynhanh Le✨, who is both my inspirational hero and love of my life. Other than that as my main hobby, I love reading(ik very unique), snacking, doing extemp, the sound of my own voice(like all speech kids, they won't admit it), and did I mention Quynhanh Le?
Quynhanh Le
Hellooooooooo! I’m Quynhanh, a junior in high school who joined Speech and Debate in middle school with crazy mentors who somehow convinced me to continue. My main event is Foreign Extemporaneous, but I’ve competed in other events including: National Extemporaneous, Informative, Public Forum, and Interpretations. As well as done some speeches in Impromptu and therefore can say that Extemporaneous is the best event. Some of my favorite things are staring into space sometimes for hours at a time, sleeping (often seen when not competing), the piplup evolution line (with the iconic prinplup plush), and hats (most recognizable clothing item).
Stella Wharton
Hey y’all! I’m a current Sophmore at Skyline and this year's impromptu captain! I have done various speech events since 6th grade and I’m excited to share my knowledge. Impromptu is my first love, and always will be. I am also on the high school volleyball team and the IB program! If you need help with anything, just let me know and I’ll help as best I can! My goal for Impromptu this year is to be a United group of friends who can speak their mind openly. We’ll work on speaking skills, confidence, and overall it will be a fun time!
Penny Madsen
Hi! I'm Penny Madsen, your oratory captain this year! I love oratory because of the freedom and time it gives you to explore whatever issue you want. This will be my third year of Speech and Debate, and I can’t wait to see what the year brings. I love all sorts of fiber arts (knitting, crocheting, needle felting), reading, and hanging out with friends.
