'The meal is awesome': Community comes together to host Thanksgiving meal at Camp Hope

SPOKANE, Wash. — The community came together to feed those in need at Camp Hope, making sure those who may not have people to spend the holidays with have somewhere to go.

Numerous churches, local businesses and neighbors from across the region volunteered their time to make it happen.

At the event there was, of course, food, fellowship and a sense of community people did not take for granted this Thanksgiving. The fry bread stole the show for some and pies took first place for others, but the smiles on people’s faces say it all.

On a chilly, winter day, the tent across the street from Camp Hope was full of Thanksgiving fixings and people from all over, sharing a meal and harvesting hope for the holidays.

“I’m hoping that a lot of these people that signed up for their housing and stuff that they get it,” Jeb Carpenter said. “That would be nice.”

Carpenter used to live at Camp Hope. He now has is own housing but is still struggling to find a new sense of community.

“I feel more at home in this place than I do in my neighborhood, which is kind of ironic,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter came back to see his friends, show support and spend Thanksgiving with others.

All of this was made possible by generous community donations, bring in food everyone at Camp Hope was grateful for.

“The meal is awesome,” Carpenter said. “I mean, it’s almost better than my house.”

Events like this are all about building bridges and connections. When people leave this access tent, their stomachs are full, and so are their hearts.
