MELBOURNE CUP FESTIVITIES
Our Melbourne Cup / Flat Oaks Trophy function was well attended. The hall and tables were beautifully decorated, the food was wonderful and there was plenty of it, with a selection of mouth-watering desserts.
Bill Gillespie, as emcee, kept everyone to time and did a terrific job commentating on the Flat Oaks Cup. Liam Farrell gave us an insight into the costs of entering a horse into the Melbourne Cup, which was enlightening to many.
Julie Drysdale supervised the catering tables ready for lunch. After lunch Jenny Garnett and Kim Lynch kicked off proceedings with the Lucky Door Prizes.
Vicki Cocksedge and Sue Moran had the difficult task of choosing the winners for Fashions on the Field and Best Hats. Meanwhile, Barbara Street judged the Best Brooch and the Men’s Crazy Socks.
Winners
Fashions on the Field: Pushpa Carroll, Joan Fell and Sue Vorobieff
Best Hats: Joanne Griffiths and Lyn Thong
Best Brooch: Merrilee Gorman, Jane Labriola and Heddy Stern
Crazy Socks: Liam Farrell, Graham Hick and Phil Prentice
Then it was time for the Flat Oaks Trophy heats and final.
With shouts of encouragement from the spectators it was a closely fought final with Bill Gillespie coming in first, Liam Farrell second, Kim Lynch third and Dawn Gilmore in fourth place.
Working very hard in the background finalising the sweeps were Joanne Griffiths and Janet Weekes, with assistance from Sue Moran and Stephanie McCarron.
Special thanks must go to all the volunteers who helped set up the hall, particularly the men who did the heavy lifting W Bourne, B Castray and D Meyer.
It was a very pleasant afternoon despite the technical difficulty with internet traffic affecting the video signal. It was lovely to see so many people dress up for the occasion and put in that extra effort. Many members commented that they had a wonderful afternoon and enjoyed socialising with their friends and meeting some of the newer members of Shellharbour City U3A.

Inaugural Clothing Swap
On Friday 8th, we held our clothes swap at the hall and by all reports, a good time was had by all. We had 22 or 23 attendees who brought about 115 pieces of clothing to swap. Nearly everyone went home with something new for their wardrobe, including Janet Weekes who got a lovely new dress donated by her sister, Joanne!!!
We had a cuppa and a chat, and there was a whole room full of shop assistants who kept on suggesting items to each other.
The clothes left after all the “shopping” were donated to the Warilla Women’s Health Centre, where clothes are given to needy people, and those who are reentering the workforce.
I’d like to thank all those who attended and those who volunteered to be shop assistants, and to those who obviously are frustrated shop assistants at heart! Thank you ladies, it was a great morning and we gave lots of clothes a new life.

We are delighted to announce that we have surpassed the 300 milestone with membership now at 306.
On 24th October 2024, Dea Prentice and Clare Farrell made a small presentation to Sonya Shah who became our 300th member. Sonya is enjoying the Mahjong class and was warmly welcomed by her classmates.
ALL ABOUT BONSAI
Our members on the Narrandera trip are not the only ones having fun.
We had a very interesting talk on Tuesday all about BONSAI.
Anna Cook who spoke to us about the community garden knows about Bonsai too!
The talk was presented by Allan Cook from the Urimbirra Bonsai Society and he brought in some great examples to show us. Check out a few photo on the image carousel opposite.
The Urimbirra group meets at the Ribbonwood Centre in Dapto at 7pm on the second Tuesday of the month and would welcome new members.
We will all be heading off to the nursery to find a suitable plant to start our Bonsai journey.
The Ukelele class is powering on and getting ready for their big concert reveal next term...
The class is growing with two more new members last week bringing our number to 11.
