Why do Drama?

The English word ‘Drama’ comes from the an ancient Greek word which means “to do or act”. This form of expression has been part of our cultures for millenniums.

We use Drama everyday! How often do you complain about something by gesturing and frowning? How often do you jump around, waving your arms in the air enthusiastically if your team scores a goal or makes a home run? How often does a lawyer or business person close their case or deal with an emotive and provocative speech? Drama runs through the fabric of our life.

In Drama, students can explore the many facets of the world around them – stories, customs and actions that piece together the meaning of their lives. The activities in Drama deepen their awareness and responses to human situations, and enhance their skills of expression and communication, and of course build their confidence in dealing with others.

What's the difference between Drama and Theatre? Drama is the process of exploring vocal and physical expression through concepts, texts, themes and other stimuli. Theatre is the more focussed discipline of transferring that process to the stage space through various production and technical elements.

At SIS, you can be involved both on stage and off stage in one act plays, improvisations, Broadway/West End musicals, classical plays, comic scenes, improvised theatre tournaments as either a costumer, designer, director, performer, make-up artist, lighting/sound technician, researcher or writer. Many professional theatre artists visit our school and train you in all aspects of the stage. There are numerous drama festivals each year to really expand your theatrical experience.

Together with the physical fitness of sport and the academic rigor of other subjects – Drama indeed makes a well rounded person, ready to take on the world!
