On the morning of August 30, 1970 the butler stone elementary school caught on fire and burned to the ground. Arson was suspected.
The Fire by Matthew Ballard, grade 6 - written in 1982
The fire at Seventh District started on Sunday night August 31. The damage to the school was around 1 million dollars.
There were many trucks and units called to the fire, the unit came from as far as New Freedom. Maryland Line Fire Department arrived first then Hereford.
The fire took approximately 6 hours to get under control and two - three days to put out the left-over smolders, but some parts of the front and back wall were saved.
This is the back wall of the school and the only part of the butler stone building that remains today.
We'd like to thank Mrs. Harriet McGinnis for allowing us to scan her personal photos of the fire - seen below.
