Wulkuraka station opened in the 1880s as Brisbane Valley Junction as it was the junction station with the Brisbane Valley line. It was renamed Wulkuraka in 1905. In 1902, to Wulkuraka from Ipswich and in 1913 it was duplicated from Wulkuraka to Grandchester past Rosewood. In 1993, the line was electrified to Rosewood from Ipswich and in the same year the Brisbane Valley Railway closed. In 2015, the station was upgraded with the construction of the New Generation Rollingstock Maintenance Centre to the west of the station.
Wulkuraka serves the homonymous suburb of Wulkuraka which was named after the local Bundjalung Aboriginal language word for either red flowering gum tree or kookaburra.
Wulkuraka station itself has two platforms consisting of two side platforms. Platform 1 is for inbound services and platform 2 is for outbound services. Along with all the other stations on the Rosewood line, the platforms at Wulkuraka are only long enough to fit three carriages. To the south of the station there is a railway line into the New Generation Rollingstock depot.
Wulkuraka station has two station entrances. One is from Dixon Street and one is from Grace Street
Wulkuraka station does have disability access.
