Fruitgrove station opened in 1935. The line was electrified to on 18 September 1982 from Roma Street to Kingston. In 2008, the station was upgraded as part of the Salisbury to Kuraby triplication project which included converting the eastern platform to an island and a new footbridge with lifts.
Fruitgrove was named after the surrounding housing estate.
Fruitgrove station has three platforms consisting of an island platform and a side platform. Platforms 1 is for outbound services, platform 3 is for inbound services and platform 2 is for some peak hour services.
