East Ipswich station opened in 1879 as Limestone, being renamed to East Ipswich in 1881. Between 1885 and 1887, the line was duplicated between Ipswich and Corinda. The line was electrified on 20 September 1980 through the station from Darra to Ipswich.
East Ipswich station serves the homonymous suburb of East Ipswich. It is believed to be named after the town in Suffolk, England.
East Ipswich station itself has two platforms consisting of two side platforms. Platform 1 is for outbound services and platform 2 is for inbound services.
