Montana Content Standards For 4th Grade Social Studies:
SS.CG.4.1 - Demonstrate civic participation within the classroom or school
Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to vote as a democracy in the classroom
Students will be able to define the term democracy
Students will be able to report whether public or anonymous voting is more effective
What is the project?
This project is a voting system. The sensor has buttons on it, so when a student presses one or the other, it will count as a vote for yes or no. To log the votes, the sensor must be put in the dark, like an election ballot box.
How does it fit in with 4th grade social studies?
This project is for students learning about U.S. government and democracy. Voting is a significant part of that.
What are the benefits?
This is a great way to casually implement technology into the classroom without just putting computers in front the students. Also, it can be used to vote on way to improve the classroom which would be engaging and make the students feel like they have a say in what goes on.
Steps:
Connect sensor to computer and on Adafruit circuit playground
Program the sensor (see image below)
Have students cast their votes one at a time by clicking the corresponding buttons for yes and no
To log all the votes, place the sensor in the dark ballot box
