As a future P-3 teacher in all my education I have noticed how important interactive sensory opportunities are. Especially for preschoolers and kindergarteners, this is a stage in their life where they are learning and developing so many basic skills especially their brain growth. Sensory gets kids using their brains and this development continues their whole life to help them complete harder tasks as they move on in life.
In classrooms Is when kids learn so many different life skills that contribute to their growth in physical and mental development. Little things from physical play, social interaction, and secluded interaction. So I wanted to create a sensory item that could be used by kids still in the early development stages and can not only be used by a group of kids but just one kid if so desired.
What I have created is a sensory wheel that develops the kids speech and language development. This wheel has a series of animals on it and when the kids clap it will cause the spinner to go around and randomly stop on an animal, at this point the kids will have to name the animal and the noise it makes. This sensory activity will cause the kids to use their physical development when they clap to make the spinner go and then use their cognitive development to name the animals and speech development to create the sound of the animal.
For grade K-5
Students will be able to interact with the spinner to build their vocabulary.
Standards
Supplies
The paper/ card board will provide the base the the spinner
These will be used to outline each section on the spinner
This will be used to tape down the spinner onto the board
Will be used to print out photos of desired animals for spinner
This will be used to code the circuit using Adafruit
This will be placed in the middle of the board as a spinner
Procedure
Gather materials
cut out circle from paper or card board
decide which animals you would like to include and pick out 10 animals
Final Product and How It Works
This is what the animal wheel will look like in the end when it is all put together. The wheel is then activated when kids clap it will spin for a couple seconds then stop on one tile on the board that will have a picture of an animal. The kids can then say the animal and make the noise of the animal. Once they are done with one animal they can continusly clap till it goes through all the animals and can go over them as many times as they would like. There can also be multiple different boards with different animals to create a wide range of vocabulary.
