Mary Jinks was born in Selby in the spring of 1891, the eldest child and only daughter of William and Ann Jinks. The family lived on Millgate in Selby and upon the outbreak of war Mary’s eldest brother William joined the war effort with the West Yorkshire Regiment. He was tragically killed at the young age of 20 on the 9th October 1917.
Mary also joined the war effort as a nurse, having first worked as a ward maid under the instruction of Irish matron Kate Margaret Mooney at the College Hospital, New Lane, Selby for some years prior to the outbreak of war. Mary died of Spanish Flu whilst at a convalescence hospital in Scotland on the 29th September 1919. She was laid to rest at the Peterculter graveyard in Aberdeenshire.
We Will Remember Her.
