You can conduct a tournament in Elimination format. There are couple of different types of elimination formats:
SINGLE ELIMINATION (SE): Teams consist of 1 player (singles tournament) or 2 players (doubles tournament). Fixture is generated by the app as per the seeding done by the super user. If a team loses any match, they are eliminated from the tournament.
DOUBLE ELIMINATION (DE): Teams consist of 1 player (singles tournament) or 2 players (doubles tournament). Fixture is generated by the app as per the seeding done by the super user. If a team loses a match, they are moved to a lower bracket. If they lose a match in the lower bracket also, they are eliminated from the tournament.
Once the fixtures are generated, pdf can be generated to help with hard copy print-outs to be displayed on the tournament day.
Team and player data can be entered one by one from the app or from a file (see template file below).
To add teams and players one by one, you (super user) can do it from the app. See the screenshots below. This needs to be done after creating the tournament.
Use this section to create the team-player file and go to next section to create the tournament.
Team and player data can also be entered from a file (microsoft excel .xls file or plain text).
If excel (.xls) file, then the first row of the file may have headers and the rest of the rows can be have team/player data. See example 1 or 2 below.
If plain text file (supported from app release 4.0.0 onwards), then each entry should be of the below format. Entries starting with "#" are considered as comments and are ignored. See example 3 below.
First row of the excel sheet may have the headers like below:
| TEAM NAME | P1 NAME | P2 NAME |
(1) Sign-in and create a tournament / teams/ players
(2) Seed the teams and Create Fixture
(3) Generated fixture is displayed
Tip: You can switch between 'List view' and 'Graph view' by clicking the top (highlighted) icon to the right of zoom icons (- +).
For scheduling estimates of a tournament bracket, click on the first match of the tournament and select 'Schedule Time'.
In the next page, enter the court numbers where this bracket will be played (number of courts will be deduced from the court numbers. Example: 1-3,6 is 4 courts [court no.1, court no.2, court no.3, court no.6]. Enter the average time (in minutes) needed for a full match (best of 1 or best of 3 or games starting at 0-0 or 10-10) to be completed. Check "Schedule all the following matches" and "Estimate Only".
Next window will give you the approximate time needed to complete this bracket. You can play around with the variables (number of courts, time needed) to plan multiple scenarios.
Once you have a plan in place, uncheck "Estimate Only" and do the same scheduling with the actual date and time for conducting this tournament bracket. This will add the scheduled time and court to each match. Club member can plan his according to these approximate timings.
You also have the capability to fine tune the timings for some of the matches, if needed. You can select the particular match to be re-scheduled and click 'Schedule Time'. This time, uncheck "Schedule all the following matches" so that only the selected match is re-scheduled.
Tip: You also have the capability to reset any existing schedules. Just check "Reset Schedule" to do this. If "Schedule all the following matches" is also checked, then all the matches following this one will also be reset.
List view is seen in this view here to the left. Scheduled time and court details are clearly visible in this summary page.
You can go back to 'Graph view' by clicking the top graph icon (highlighted in the left picture).
Tip: For double-elimination matches, schedule upper bracket matches first. Push the starting time of the lower bracket, so that at least first round of the upper bracket is completed before this.
Example: One practical example for scheduling a double elimination match involving 16 teams, when a total of 4 courts are available:
Select first match of 1st round of Upper Bracket (and all following matches of UB) on all 4 courts.
Select first match of 2nd round of Upper Bracket (and all following matches of UB) on 2 courts (1,2), with starting time after end time of step 1.
Select first match of 1st round of Lower Bracket (and all following matches of LB) on 2 courts (3,4), with starting time after end time of step 1.
Click on "Finals" and schedule just the Finals to another time, if needed.
If you have already scheduled your tournament matches, then "Courts View" mode is the best option to update scores on the tournament day.
Once you see the matches in chronological order in Courts View, just click on the match to update which will take you directly to the match to update score.
You could also filter the Courts View matches by Tournament, by clicking on the filter icon on top.
Click the filter icon again if you want to filter by court numbers.
What if something bad happens on the tournament? I want to have a backup plan.
Sure. You have an option to export the tournament fixtures as pdf. You need super-user privilege to do this. For Single/Double elimination tournaments, go to settings (three dots on top-right) of Tournament fixture page and click "Export pdf". Exported documents will be available in Documents/ScoreTally folder.
For a League tournament, go to Schedule page and then click "Export pdf" from settings (three dots on top-right).
You can print-outs of this as your backup-plan.
Singles tournament can be conducted in the same manner as above, by just making a minor change to the input team/player data. Teams added to this tournament will have only one player in each team.
See example 3 sample data file above.
