The deep-sea world is a harsh environment. The pressure is about 100 times greater than the air pressure you feel land. The water is freezing cold and pitch-dark, and food is scarce. But as eerie as this world is, it's home, sweet home for many animals that are adapted to living here. Some creatures have large, sensitive eyes to gather what little light there is. Many animals are bioluminescent. A variety of animals, such as squid, have rubbery bodies without air spaces in them, which helps them cope with heavy pressure. No air spaces means no squashing!
